Memphis Grizzlies fans got a clear signal at Media Day: the health of Zach Edey matters at the center of everything.
General manager Zach Kleiman said Edey is cleared to compete after surgery that ended his 2025-2026 campaign, and that’s the kind of update Memphis needed most. Edey’s impact goes beyond one side of the floor.
He matters on both ends, and the Grizzlies’ chances of getting anywhere near a postseason run look tied to having him available. The team will be wise to handle him carefully in the preseason, but the bigger point is simple: a healthy Edey changes the equation.
That availability also gives Memphis a chance to build chemistry with Cameron Boozer, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Not everything was clean on the injury front, though. Micah Peavy, who is on the edge of the roster in terms of cuts, will not be able to start training camp because of an ankle injury.
Boozer was another major topic, and head coach Tuomas Iisalo made it clear he sees real versatility there. He pointed to Boozer’s "high level" ability to create and said he expects the Grizzlies to use him in a variety of ways.
That opens the door to some intriguing lineup ideas, including the possibility of Boozer functioning as a "Point Forward" in Memphis. A starting five of Jaylen Wells, Cedric Coward, Jerami Grant, Boozer and Edey would be one possible version of that vision, though Iisalo’s comments about another player suggest that may be getting ahead of things.
Iisalo also acknowledged the rookie growing pains Boozer will face. Still, it’s not hard to see why Memphis is excited.
Boozer comes in with a polished game, and that’s part of why he’s viewed as one of the favorites in a crowded Rookie of the Year race. His role should only expand as the season goes on.
The most intriguing hint from Iisalo may have come at point guard. Based on what he said at Media Day, he seems to have a read on who could handle the role of Ja Morant’s replacement. Scotty Pippen Jr. has his backers, but Iisalo’s comments pointed elsewhere: Ty Jerome.
That mention carries weight. Any time a coach puts a player in the same conversation as Luka Doncic, even indirectly, it’s a sign that player has made a real impression. Jerome was electric offensively last season, though the sample size was small enough to make it hard to know exactly what to expect over a full year.
Now he’ll get a longer runway on a team that is no longer tanking, and Memphis will learn whether that production can hold up. If Jerome can deliver even 75% of what he showed last season across an entire campaign, he’d be on one of the most valuable contracts in the league. That could make him a long-term answer at point guard, or a major trade chip by the deadline this winter.
For now, the tone from Memphis’ top decision-makers was clear: optimism is back on the table, and the Grizzlies are looking ahead to a new season with real possibilities.
