Carlos Boozer got a front-row seat to one of those moments every basketball parent dreams about in Las Vegas, and he wasn’t trying to hide how much it meant.
The two-time NBA All-Star was in the building to watch his son, Memphis Grizzlies rookie Cam Boozer, make his mark in Summer League as the Grizzlies edged the Chicago Bulls 97-96. Before and during the game, the elder Boozer talked about the message he passed along ahead of his son’s professional debut.
“My advice to him is just be where your feet are. Enjoy every moment,” Boozer said in a mid-game interview.
“It goes by so quickly. I still remember my first time in Summer League, and now I'm watching my son do it.”
Now in the Utah Jazz's front office, Boozer said the emotions hit him all at once as he watched Cam step into the moment he’s been chasing for years.
“Just every emotion, all over the place. Super excited, get the chills,” Boozer said.
“Like he's wanted this his entire life. He's finally here.
So just happy for him.”
Cam Boozer backed up the hype in a close game, finishing with 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting in 27 minutes. He also added six rebounds, four assists, a steal, and a block while Memphis survived a huge night from Chicago’s Caleb Wilson, who poured in a game-high 35 points.
It was another strong showing for Boozer after his official Summer League debut a week earlier in Salt Lake City, where he put up 15 points, four rebounds, and four assists in a win over Oklahoma City.
When asked what stands out most about his son’s game, Carlos Boozer went straight to the versatility.
“His skill set's amazing. He's so versatile.
Can shoot it, can play outside, can play inside, can be a hub, like a point forward out there,” Boozer said. “He's a terrific passer.
It's mind, he out-thinks everybody. That's his biggest IQ.”
He also made it clear he doesn’t plan to micromanage the rookie process.

“Some of it, he just got to be in the fire, going through it himself,” Boozer said. “He's such a student of the game.
He'll study over and over and over again. He's the kid that's going to figure it out on his own, but he'll be there.”
For Memphis, the early signs from its prized rookie have been encouraging, and for Carlos Boozer, the whole scene was exactly the kind of moment a father never forgets.
