New NFL Interest Emerges For Maryland Seniors

Maryland football seniors make waves as NFL scouts show interest in key players following standout Pro Day performances.

Jalen Huskey's journey to becoming a standout prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft is a testament to adaptability and skill. Originally catching eyes as a top draft prospect during last year's spring ball, Huskey's transformation from cornerback to safety has been pivotal. "Playing corner, nickel, and safety really jumpstarted my career," Huskey shared, crediting Coach Locks for the switch that elevated his game.

Huskey made his presence felt in every game during the 2024 season, starting all but one. However, it was his transition to safety on Nov. 9 against Oregon that marked the beginning of his ascent. By 2025, he was one of Maryland's defensive stars, securing four interceptions-including three over a four-game stretch-and ranking sixth in tackles among Big Ten safeties.

Recently, Huskey met with the Denver Broncos and New York Giants, with the New England Patriots showing interest post-Pro Day. Maryland's reputation for producing NFL-caliber defensive backs continues to grow, potentially adding another name to its list since 2019.

Coach Mike Locksley praised Huskey's versatility, highlighting his ability to play multiple positions. "He's a guy that’s played corner at a high level and has safety skills, allowing him to be a slot nickel or even a corner in a pinch," Locksley noted.

Meanwhile, Alan Herron is also making waves. The right tackle, who started all 24 games at Maryland, has a top-30 visit with the New Orleans Saints.

Herron’s journey from DII Shorter University to Maryland, and now to an NFL prospect, underscores his resilience and talent. Despite coaching changes, Herron adapted and thrived, crediting coaches Wroblewski and Hunter for their guidance.

Both Huskey and Herron showcased their skills at the NFL Scouting Combine, with Herron also participating in the Senior Bowl and American Bowl All-Star Game. Wide receivers Octavian Smith and Jalil Farooq joined them in the Hula Bowl, with Smith impressing scouts with his speed and route running. Smith spoke with representatives from 20 NFL teams, relishing the opportunity to connect and make an impression.

Shaleak Knotts and long snapper Ethan Gough also represented Maryland, while defensive lineman Cam Rice emerged as a potential sleeper pick. Rice, a former DII All-American from West Liberty University, started all 12 games for Maryland and demonstrated his prowess with consistent tackles for loss.

Rice caught the attention of scouts from the Carolina Panthers and has upcoming workouts with the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders, further solidifying his status as a promising NFL prospect.
