Milford Mill Academy is back in the Maryland Media State Poll, and it didn’t sneak in quietly.
After opening the season outside the rankings and taking a 42-7 beating from Dunbar in Week 1, the Millers answered with a statement win that forced everyone to take notice. Milford Mill stunned then-No.
10 Broadneck, 48-25, and that result pushed the program back into the Top 25 at No. 15.
It’s the same spot Milford Mill finished in last season after reaching the state semifinals.
That return comes after a preseason in which the Millers were largely ignored following the graduation of a strong senior group. The early loss to Dunbar only deepened the skepticism. But the Broadneck game changed the conversation fast.
Milford Mill is one of three new teams entering this week’s poll. Bullis School checks in at No. 24 and St.
Charles at No. 25.
Dropping out are Old Mill, Georgetown Prep and Bishop McNamara, though Prep and McNamara are still getting votes.
The top of the poll remains unchanged where it matters most. St.
Frances Academy holds the No. 1 spot, with DeMatha right behind after suffering its first loss in 24 games last week. Archbishop Spalding and McDonogh swapped places again, with Spalding moving up to No. 3 and McDonogh sliding to No.
- Quince Orchard also climbed past Good Counsel to grab No.
The biggest leap among ranked teams belonged to Loyola Blakefield, which moved from No. 25 to No. 19 after a 53-14 rout of Georgetown Prep.
This week’s slate is headlined by No. 3 Spalding against No.
13 Mount St. Joseph.
The only other ranked matchup on the schedule is No. 21 Patuxent against No.
25 St. Charles.
The Maryland Media State Poll is in its 36th year and is based on a statewide vote of sports reporters, including High School On SI’s Maryland rankings. Schools are ranked by points received, with the number in parentheses showing first-place votes and LW indicating last week’s ranking. Sheldon Shealer compiles the rankings.
Others Receiving Votes: Bishop McNamara (2-1, 6 points), Fort Hill (2-0, 5), Easton (2-0, 3), Flowers (1-0, 3), Stephen Decatur (2-0, 2), Georgetown Prep (1-1, 1), Riverdale Baptist (2-1, 1).
