Georgetown is trying to turn Saturday night into something more than a nonconference game.
After opening the season with a 22-point win over Loyola (Md.), Hoyas coach Ed Cooley is already focused on the next challenge: Maryland, which comes to Capital One Arena for the second game in the four-year series between the programs. The matchup gives Maryland its first official road game of the season, but Georgetown is hoping the local pull of both fan bases can tilt the building in its favor.
To help make that happen, Georgetown announced $1 beer nights for Hoyas students for 75 minutes before tipoff, a late push to juice the atmosphere. Cooley said the setting should have the feel of a postseason game.
“will feel like a tournament game.”
He said the matchup is really for the region around both schools.
“I hope the entire DMV - we [are] playing this game really for our community. Back when Kevin [Willard] was the coach at Maryland, we signed a four year agreement to play home-and-home. And hopefully our community shows the love that we showed them renewing this rivalry here in our area,” Cooley said on Monday night.
Cooley also pointed to Maryland’s strength on the offensive glass, calling the Terrapins a tough matchup.
“I think Maryland’s an elite offensive rebounding team. I think Buzz does a really good job with that,” Cooley said.
Maryland arrives with its own motivation. The Terrapins beat Bucknell to open the year, but last season’s trip to Georgetown still lingers after Maryland was beaten by 10 at home following a 22-point win over Coppin State to start the Buzz Williams era. Guard Andre Mills said the rematch carries extra weight for the new-look group, calling Saturday “personal.”
Cooley expects a physical battle and said his team has to be ready for the environment.
“We know we’re going to face a very physical team, a team we were fortunate to win on the road last year. We’re going to be playing in a hostile environment.
Hopefully it’s our hostile environment against our opponent,” Cooley said. “Our thing that I need all of you in this room to do is please have people come out to support the game.
We need that home court advantage.”

Maryland Faces A Brutal Big Ten Test As Pressure Builds Fast
Maryland heads into its next Big Ten matchup carrying plenty of urgency, with an interim staff trying to steady the program and a conference slate that has offered little relief. Aazaar Abdul-Rahim is guiding the Terrapins after Mike Locksleys departure, and the challenge only gets sharper with Purdue coming in after finally breaking through its own long skid. Both teams have been talking about progress and the grind of getting back on track, which makes this one feel less like a routine conference game and more like a measuring stick for where each program really stands.
Purdues recent turnaround gives this meeting an added edge, since Barry Odoms group has already shown it can climb out of a difficult stretch and now has a chance to keep building. Maryland, meanwhile, is still searching for the kind of response that can change the tone around the program, and the pressure only grows with every missed opportunity. The Terrapins do not need a perfect performance so much as a credible one, but against a team that has already rediscovered some momentum, even that figure will be hard-earned. [Read more 🡒]
Marylands Coaching Search Could Be Turning Toward A Very Different Identity
Maryland has brought in TurnkeyZRG to help guide its national search for a new football coach, a sign the program is taking a broad, outside-the-box approach as it looks for its next leader. One name already drawing attention is Jason Eck, the New Mexico head coach whose rise has put him on the radar in College Park and beyond.
Ecks appeal goes beyond just being available in a crowded coaching market. At New Mexico, he has built a program that wins with toughness and discipline, and that kind of identity could resonate for a Maryland team trying to define what it wants to be moving forward. The question now is whether the Terps are ready to lean into that kind of profile, or whether the search takes them in a different direction altogether. [Read more 🡒]
Maryland Fans Just Got A New Way To Hear Buzz Williams
Maryland basketball fans are getting a fresh way to stay plugged in this season, with the Maryland Basketball Show returning in a new format and a wider reach. The program will stream live from the XFINITY Center on Maryland social platforms, then air later on Baltimore and Washington, D.C. radio stations, while also being available through the school website, app and the Hear The Turtle podcast.

The mens side will feature Buzz Williams across the run of the program, with additional episodes involving Brenda Frese to be announced, giving Terrapins followers another regular window into both programs as the 2026-27 season gets underway.
