Maryland's 2026-27 Home Slate Raises One Huge Early Question

As Maryland announces its challenging 2026-27 men's basketball schedule, head coach Buzz Williams braces for a competitive non-conference lineup that promises to test and refine his team.

Maryland’s 2026-27 non-conference schedule is starting to take shape, and the Terps are loading up on familiar names, regional matchups and a trip to Las Vegas.

Buzz Williams’ team is set to face another demanding early slate, with a “road” game at Georgetown, a home date with Virginia and neutral-site meetings against South Carolina and Tennessee already on the board. Now, thanks to details reported earlier this week by Rocco Miller of Bracketeer.org, the rest of the non-conference picture is coming into focus.

The opener should come Nov. 2 at home against Bucknell, a game that would give Maryland a chance to start 10-0. It will be the first meeting between the teams since 2024.

After the Georgetown trip and the Virginia game in College Park, Maryland will stay home for back-to-back matchups against Alcorn State and Wagner. The Terps beat both teams last season, and each game gives Maryland a shot to move to 5-0 in the series.

The schedule then shifts to the Players Era Tournament in Las Vegas, where Maryland’s first-round opponent is already known: Tennessee. After that, the Terps return to College Park for a Dec. 2 game against American.

That matchup brings a built-in local angle, with Duane Simpkins returning in a sense to the program and area where he made his name. Simpkins starred at DeMatha before becoming a three-time All-ACC honorable mention selection at Maryland.

He was part of two Sweet 16 teams and ranks eighth in program history in assists. It will also be the first meeting between Maryland and American since 2016, and the Terps lead the series 16-2.

Maryland’s December also includes a previously announced game against South Carolina at CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore, followed by a Dec. 29 home game against Radford.

The Big Ten schedule has also been set, though dates have not been announced yet. Maryland will play Indiana, Michigan State and Rutgers twice. The Terps’ home conference slate includes Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, UCLA, USC and Wisconsin, while road trips are set for Iowa, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Purdue and Washington.

Maryland is trying to bounce back from a 12-win season with a roster reshaped by several experienced portal additions, plus former five-star Baba Oladotun. Athletic director Jim Smith’s announcement that Pharrel Payne received his waiver approval also confirmed that the star center is back to anchor the frontcourt.

DeMatha Football Just Saw A Stunning Change Around Bill McGregor

DeMatha Catholic High School made a notable football change this week, announcing that legendary coach Bill McGregor is stepping away on a leave of absence for personal reasons while staying connected to the program as Director of Football Operations. For a school that has long been synonymous with McGregors presence and leadership, the move marks a significant shift even if it is not a full departure.

Bryce Bevill, a DeMatha alumnus with a long background as both a player and coach, has been named interim head coach. Bevills ties to the program run deep, and his appointment gives the Stags a familiar face at the front of the operation while the school navigates what comes next around McGregors future on the sideline.
