Maryland left Connecticut with a convincing 38-14 win on Sept. 12, and the result gave the Terrapins their first road victory of the season. After following last week’s win over Hampton with another complete showing, Maryland looked like a team that handled business in every phase.
Head coach Michael Locksley said the trip offered a clear test of where his group stood.
“Really proud of this team to come out on the road, and as I told them, this would kind of be an audit for us. It’ll tell us a lot about ourselves - first road opportunity. I felt like we did a good job of taking care of business,” head coach Michael Locksley said.
The win also matched Maryland’s road victory total from 2025, when the Terps went 1-4 away from home.
The biggest difference for Maryland was the comfort level of Malik Washington. The sophomore quarterback looked far more settled against UConn than he had against Hampton, playing with rhythm and control from the start.
“Definitely something we kind of emphasized all week, staying in rhythm, staying on schedule, deep breaths before the play, and allowing the play to play out and execute the play.” Washington said.
He got the offense moving early by hitting junior wide receiver Na’emm Abdul-Rahim Gladding for a 60-yard touchdown, a strike that immediately put Maryland in gear. The passing game kept rolling from there, with Gladding finishing at 130 receiving yards and junior wide receiver Chris Durr Jr. adding 103 yards along with a 13-yard touchdown catch.
Washington also showed poise late in the first half. Maryland reached UConn’s 1-yard line but couldn’t finish the drive in the end zone, settling for a field goal anyway and taking a 17-7 lead into halftime.
By the end of the afternoon, Washington had put together one of the best outings of his career, completing 34 of 41 passes for 347 yards and two touchdowns.
“Malik was really efficient when we needed him to be,” Locksley said. “This was a team that we thought the front seven was the strength of their defense and we wanted to kind of be pass first to help with the run.
Obviously not having DeJuan Williams today, we leaned on Malik a little bit more. But I was really happy with the way the two young guys ran the ball.”
Maryland’s defense kept the game under control as well. UConn found the end zone twice on explosive plays, with junior wide receiver JD Willoughby catching a 36-yard touchdown and senior receiver Shamar Porter adding a 39-yard score. Beyond those moments, though, the Terps dictated the game.
“Once again, the defense was solid,” Locksley said. “Gave up some explosives for touchdowns that were unlike the two veteran corners we’ve got, just didn’t play with the discipline we need, but they did a really good job against the run.”
The Huskies managed only 3 of 11 on third down, and Maryland’s pass rush helped squeeze them throughout the day. The Terps recorded five sacks and added another takeaway when sophomore defensive lineman Sidney Stewart forced a fumble that freshman Zion Elee recovered.
Maryland’s offense stayed balanced, too. With sophomore running back DeJuan Williams unavailable and not traveling with the team, Iverson Howard stepped into the starting role. Maryland Sports Radio Network’s Steve Suter reported that Williams will miss four to six weeks after minor knee surgery.
The Terps ended with 36 passing plays and 42 rushing attempts, and the ground game did its part. Howard ran for 55 yards and a touchdown, while freshman Harry Dalton III made a major impact with 48 rushing yards and two scores.
“Those guys have been putting in a lot of work throughout camp and throughout the offseason. We have a three-headed monster at running back,” Washington said. “One of our guys goes down, another one gets banged up, the next-man-up mentality is what we need.”

DJ Moore Already Looks Like A Huge Part Of Buffalos Offense
Week 1 of the NFL season offered a strong early showing for Maryland football alumni, with 14 former Terrapins appearing in games across the league. One of the most notable debuts came from DJ Moore, who stepped into Buffalos offense and immediately made an impact in a win over the Houston Texans, finishing with five catches for 100 yards and a touchdown.
For Maryland fans, it was another reminder of how much pro production continues to flow out of the program. Moore was hardly the only Terp to make a mark, either, with Nick Cross, Stefon Diggs and Deonte Banks also contributing in their own spots while others spent the day inactive or on practice squads.
