Maryland Lurks As Legendary QB Seeks HC Job

Russell Wilson, recently retired from a prolific NFL career, eyes a new role as head coach for his alma mater, NC State.

Russell Wilson has reportedly entered the mix for NC State’s head coaching job.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the former Seattle Seahawks quarterback interviewed for the position on Tuesday. Wilson spent three seasons at NC State from 2008-10 before transferring to Wisconsin for his final college year in 2011.

He is not the only former Wolfpack quarterback tied to the opening. ESPN reported Saturday that Philip Rivers, another NC State alum and an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, has “engaged in serious discussions” about coaching his alma mater.

NC State moved on from Dave Doeren on Oct. 24 after a 3-4 start. Doeren was in his 14th season leading the Wolfpack.

Wilson, 37, stepped away from the NFL in June after a 14-year career and is now working as a CBS Sports analyst on “The NFL Today” this fall.

His playing résumé is long and loaded. In Seattle from 2012-21, Wilson became known for his deep ball and his ability to escape pressure, leading the Seahawks to two Super Bowl appearances and their first championship. He also set franchise records, finished in the top four of AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year voting three times and won the NFL’s 2020 Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

Wilson’s career took a different turn after Seattle traded him to Denver in March 2022 in a blockbuster deal. The move sent the Seahawks into a new phase that eventually produced their 2025 Super Bowl-winning team, while Wilson’s own results declined. Over his final four seasons, he went 17-27 as a starter across three teams, including an 11-19 mark in Denver from 2022-23, 6-5 with Pittsburgh in 2024 and 0-3 with the Giants in 2025 before Jaxson Dart took over.

Across his 14 NFL seasons, Wilson finished with 46,966 passing yards, 353 passing touchdowns and 114 interceptions. On the ground, he added 5,568 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns, making him the only player in league history to top both 40,000 passing yards and 5,000 rushing yards.

Maryland Football Rankings Just Shook Up Flowers' Playoff Path

The latest High School On SI Maryland football Top 25 brought a noticeable shakeup to the state picture, with Charles H. Flowers entering the rankings at No. 22. It is the kind of late-season recognition that can matter in a crowded playoff race, especially with several established powers like Saint Frances Academy still setting the standard at the top of the list and title defenses getting underway this weekend for teams such as Quince Orchard, Linganore and Paul Laurence Dunbar.

The bigger ripple, though, came from Henry A. Wise, which fell out of the Top 10 after forfeiting four wins because of MPSSAA and Prince Georges County athletic rule violations. Among the games affected was Wises Sept. 28 win over Flowers, a result that now carries a different weight as playoff seedings take shape and the path ahead gets a little less predictable for teams trying to climb. Maryland Faces A Brutal Big Ten Test As Pressure Builds Fast

Maryland heads into its next Big Ten matchup carrying the kind of pressure that can change the mood around a program in a hurry. The Terrapins have been searching for traction in conference play, and the challenge only gets sharper with Purdue coming to town after the Boilermakers recently put an end to their own long skid. It is the sort of meeting that can tell you a lot about where both teams are right now, especially with Maryland still sorting itself out under interim coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim.

Purdue arrives with Barry Odom trying to keep his group moving forward after a difficult start, while Maryland is still looking for signs that the progress it has talked about can show up when the stakes rise. Both sides are coming off losses, which adds another layer to a game that already feels important for momentum and confidence. For the Terps, the question is less about style points and more about whether they can finally turn competitive stretches into something more lasting. [Read more 🡒]

Maryland Fans Got One Big Reason For Hope On Both Sides

Marylands basketball season opened with a split-screen kind of night, and both sides gave fans something to hang onto. The women went to France and took on No. 1 South Carolina in a tough early test, hanging around long enough to make the final margin respectable in an eight-point loss. Even in defeat, there was a clear sign that the Terps may have more firepower than expected as they settle into the season.

The men, meanwhile, handled business at home in their opener against Bucknell, rolling to a 29-point win and giving the crowd a comfortable start to the year. One of the more encouraging notes came from the bench, where freshman Baba Oladotun got his first taste of Maryland basketball and chipped in across the stat sheet. For a fan base looking for reasons to believe on both ends, the opening week offered a little of everything. [Read more 🡒]
