The Capital City Go-Go have their next head coach, and the Washington Wizards are keeping the job in the family tree of rising basketball minds.
On June 25, the Wizards announced they were hiring Tevon Saddler to lead their G League affiliate. Saddler is 31, from Aberdeen, Maryland, and the move sends him back home after a rapid climb through the coaching ranks.
His most recent stop was Nicholls State, where he spent three seasons as head coach from 2022-2025. In that stretch, Saddler went 54-46 overall and 38-22 in Southland Conference play. Nicholls’ final season under Saddler ended with a quarterfinal loss to UTRGV in the Southland Conference Tournament.
Before taking over at Nicholls, Saddler spent the 2022-23 season at Maryland as director of player personnel on Kevin Willard’s staff. That year, the Terps reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to No.
1 Alabama. Jahmir Young emerged as one of the program’s top scorers, while Julian Reese continued building toward becoming a long-term fixture.
Saddler’s path to this point started well before that. He worked as a graduate assistant at South Alabama in 2018-19, then served as director of basketball operations at Nicholls State from 2019-2021, and later joined McNeese State as an assistant coach in 2021-22.
He also brings a playing background that fits the profile of someone who understands the game from every angle. Saddler played three college seasons, two at UNC Greensboro and one at Nicholls State. The 6-foot-6 guard averaged 13.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 43% from the field and 77% at the free-throw line.
The Wizards’ search reportedly included at least nine other candidates before Saddler got the nod.
Now he takes over a Go-Go program that has been one of the steadier teams in the G League since joining in 2018-19. Capital City has finished with 20 or more wins and a .500-or-better record in five of its seven seasons, though postseason success has been limited, with just two wins in six playoff games.
The Go-Go have also served as a pipeline to the NBA. Players such as Jahmir Reese last season, Chasson Randle, Chris Chiozza, Jordan Goodwin, and Quenton Jackson have all moved through the system. On the Wizards side, Sharife Cooper, Leaky Black, Will Riley, Jahmir Watkins, Tristian Vukcevic, and Justin Champagnie have spent the past two seasons developing in the G League before becoming meaningful pieces at different points on the roster.
Saddler’s task in D.C. will be to keep that development track rolling. The Wizards are betting on his track record of working with players and helping them take the next step.
