In a spirited return to College Park, over 100 former Maryland men’s basketball alumni and their families gathered to witness the Terps’ thrilling 64-60 victory against Washington on February 21. This event marked the public launch of the Maryland Basketball Coalition, a nonprofit aimed at strengthening ties between past and present members of the program.
The coalition was the brainchild of former Maryland basketball players Dave Neal and Matt Raydo. Their vision?
To foster a more active alumni presence that supports today’s team. “The ultimate goal is to bring back Maryland basketball alumni,” Neal shared on Glenn Clark Radio.
“We’re talking former coaches, players, managers-everyone who’s ever worn the Maryland jersey.”
The initiative is designed to bolster the program’s professional network while providing tangible support to the current team. Neal emphasized the importance of reconnecting alumni through events and meetups, aiming to restore Maryland basketball to its former glory. “We want to get people excited, back on campus, and help athletic director Jim Smith and head coach Buzz Williams elevate Maryland athletics,” Neal explained.
The turnout against Washington was impressive, with about 75 alumni attending a practice and engaging in film sessions with the coaching staff. Neal noted, “This was the largest gathering of alumni for a single game in Maryland history.” The alumni were greeted with a standing ovation when they took to the court at halftime.
Both Smith and Williams have embraced the coalition, collaborating with faculty and staff to make the initiative a success. Neal expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “Working closely with Jim Smith and the athletic department, this could be something very special for Maryland basketball and its alumni.”
The coalition aims to alleviate some of the coaching staff’s burdens while building a robust alumni presence. “We’ll take it off Buzz and his team,” Neal said, highlighting the foundation they’re laying for future growth.
Despite living in Rio de Janeiro, Neal remains deeply involved. He was present for Alumni Day, demonstrating his commitment to reigniting Maryland pride.
Neal, whose wife works with the U.S. Consulate in Rio, has lived in Brazil for nearly eight years.
Reflecting on the weekend, Neal emphasized the importance of rekindling the Maryland spirit. “It’s about reuniting the pride and love we all have for the University of Maryland,” he said.
Neal also expressed unwavering confidence in Coach Williams, urging fans to remain supportive despite recent challenges. “Buzz is a winner.
His record speaks for itself. He consistently leads teams to NCAA Tournaments,” Neal affirmed.
“Stay excited and keep showing your support.”
