Chig Okonkwo and Nick Cross Reunite with Commanders in Exciting DMV Return

Former Maryland stars Chig Okonkwo and Nick Cross bring their talents back to the DMV as they sign with the Washington Commanders, promising fresh energy to the team.

Two former Maryland Terrapins are making their way back to familiar territory, signing with the Washington Commanders in a move that reunites them with the DMV area. Tight end Chig Okonkwo and safety Nick Cross have inked deals with the Commanders, adding depth and local talent to Washington's evolving roster.

Okonkwo, after four solid seasons with the Tennessee Titans, has agreed to a three-year contract. The 26-year-old has been a reliable target since being drafted in the fourth round in 2022. Last season, he led the Titans in receiving with 56 catches for 560 yards and two touchdowns, showcasing his consistent playmaking ability.

Nick Cross, a Bowie native, returns home after three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. Drafted in the third round in 2022, Cross steadily climbed the ranks to become a starting safety by 2024.

Known for his versatility, he excelled in both coverage and run support, starting all 17 games in 2024 and continuing his strong performance in 2025. His return to the area comes with a two-year, $7 million deal, bringing him back to where he shined at DeMatha High School.

During his time with the Colts, Cross amassed over 200 tackles, along with several interceptions and pass breakups, playing various roles in the defense. His high school and college career laid a strong foundation, highlighted by standout performances and accolades like second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2021.

Okonkwo's journey to the NFL began as a three-star recruit from Alpharetta, Georgia. He made a significant impact at Maryland, finishing with 98 receptions for 1,193 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Despite missing the 2020 season due to myocarditis, his resilience and talent were evident, particularly during his impressive senior year. His pre-draft rise was marked by an eye-catching 4.52-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.

Cross, another highly touted recruit, made waves at Maryland with 134 tackles, six interceptions, and 13 pass breakups over three seasons. His 2021 campaign was particularly noteworthy, earning him All-Big Ten recognition and setting the stage for his early entry into the NFL Draft.

Both players bring a blend of talent and local roots to the Commanders, promising to be key contributors as they continue their professional journeys back home.
