Buzz Williams Linked to Maryland's Plan for Basketball Revival

Maryland's Athletic Director Jim Smith outlines strategic moves and challenges in revitalizing the beleaguered basketball program while balancing player retention and recruitment.

As Maryland's men's basketball team wrapped up a challenging 11-21 season, Athletic Director Jim Smith wasn't waiting around. With the Terps tying their all-time record for losses, Smith and head coach Buzz Williams are already plotting a comeback, aiming for an A-plus offseason.

"We're not waiting until after the season to discuss next year," Smith shared on 105.7 The Fan's Vinny and Haynie Show. "The transfer portal moves fast, so we need to decide where to allocate our resources and how to improve quickly. Buzz and I are in constant talks about what needs fixing and how to get there."

For Maryland football, retaining talent was key, but basketball has a different challenge. The team needs fresh faces while keeping top players like Andre Mills and Pharrel Payne, assuming Payne gets a medical waiver.

"We discussed this during football season. Retaining top talent is crucial for competitiveness," Smith explained.

"We need to recruit and use the portal to build a successful roster. Buzz and his staff are evaluating who wants to stay and how to strengthen the team."

Smith also touched on the broader landscape of college sports, expressing concerns about sustainability and the impact of NIL deals on athlete loyalty. "Degrees still matter, but the constant transfers challenge loyalty.

Imagine the NFL with every player as a free agent yearly. Continuity is key, and eligibility rules could help maintain it."

Reflecting on a recent alumni event, Smith highlighted the deep-rooted passion for Maryland basketball. "Our alumni reunion after the Washington game was fantastic. The loyalty and passion for our university are palpable, and that's what we aim to foster."

Looking ahead to spring football, Smith is eager to see the team in action. "I'm excited for day one of spring ball.

We have a new approach on offense and solid defense. It's going to be an exciting season."

Finally, on the topic of competitive pressures, Smith humorously addressed a comment about Notre Dame's high-value defensive players. "Vinnie, don't say that out loud!

You're just driving up prices for everyone else [laughs]. But that's the reality for some programs."

Smith's proactive approach and candid insights show a clear path forward for Maryland's athletic programs, balancing immediate needs with long-term goals.
