Whit Weeks Gives LSU Fans Real Hope Entering Alabama Week

While Whit Weeks' upgrade to doubtful ignites some hope, LSU will face Alabama with key players still sidelined.

LSU got a small but important bump on Wednesday night, but not the kind that changes the whole picture.

Whit Weeks, the Tigers’ star linebacker, was upgraded on the first SEC injury report of the week ahead of LSU’s matchup with Alabama, though he remains doubtful. That was the headline everyone was waiting on after both teams had last Saturday off, especially with Weeks targeting this week as his return window.

For LSU, the full report listed S Dashawn Spears, WR Phillip Wright III, LB Charles Ross II and DL Richard Anderson as out. Behind them, Weeks was the lone player listed as doubtful, while LB Zach Weeks was questionable.

The update is better than being ruled out outright, but it still leaves his status very much in doubt. Players can get from doubtful to active, but that is not the expectation here.

LSU has managed without him so far. Davhon Keys has filled in and played well, and the offseason addition of TJ Dottery has turned out to be even more valuable than the Tigers expected.

Still, there’s no question Weeks would give the defense another gear if he’s able to go. Wearing No. 7 means something, and his coverage ability gives LSU something Keys and Dottery don’t quite provide in the same way.

That’s especially relevant after Kentucky was able to exploit that area.

Alabama’s report came with its own set of questions.

LB Desmond Umeozulu, LB Cayden Jones, DB Nick Sherman and DL Jeremiah Bearman were all listed out. QB Jett Thomalla was doubtful, while RB AK Dear, WR Ryan Coleman-Williams, DB Zabien Brown, RB EJ Crowell, OL Racin Delgatty, OL William Sanders and DL Terrance Green were all questionable.

Two of those names stand out in particular. Coleman-Williams, a freshman who burst onto the scene and then dipped last season, has posted essentially the same per-game production this year as he did in his first campaign, just slightly better.

Brown remains Alabama’s top cornerback, even if his numbers have slipped a bit. He’s allowing a 101.9 NFL passer rating when targeted this season and has two pass breakups, with five interceptions across his first two seasons and none so far as a junior.

For now, the biggest LSU storyline remains Weeks. He’s closer than he was, but Wednesday’s report made clear that his return is still not a sure thing.

LSU Fans Have A New Reason To Worry About Blake Baker

Blake Bakers rise at LSU has already made him one of the more important assistants in the SEC, and now it has put him on the radar for a bigger opening. Florida State is searching for a new head coach after Mike Norvells firing, and Baker has emerged as a potential candidate thanks to his reputation for turning defenses around and his recruiting connections across the Southeast.

For LSU, the concern is obvious. Baker is the highest-paid assistant coach in college football, and he has already shown a willingness to stay put when other jobs came calling, turning down offers from Tulane and Memphis to remain in Baton Rouge. Still, a vacancy like Florida States can change the conversation quickly, and Baker is among a crowded field that also includes Manny Diaz, Eli Drinkwitz, Jake Dickert, Kenny Dillingham, Jason Eck, Glenn Schumann, Rhett Lashlee and Jimbo Fisher. LSU Fans Have A Chance To Make Tiger Stadium History Vs Bama

Tiger Stadium is about to get its own crack at a noise record that already belongs to Tennessee, and the timing could hardly be better. LSU plans to measure crowd volume during its upcoming home game against Alabama, giving fans a chance to turn one of college footballs loudest venues into the loudest one on record.

The benchmark is 130.3 decibels, set by Tennessee in a game against Alabama, and LSU will have another shot later in the season when Texas comes to Baton Rouge. Tennessee, meanwhile, gets a return engagement of its own when it hosts LSU in the home finale, leaving the door open for the Volunteers to try to take the record back. [Read more 🡒]

Brian Kelly Weighs In On A Game LSU Fans Can't Ignore

Brian Kelly has been around enough big games to know when one can ripple beyond its own matchup, and he sees that kind of weight in Ole Miss upcoming SEC showdown with Georgia. The former Notre Dame and LSU coach pointed to the Rebels recent success against Georgia and the edge of playing at home as the main reasons he expects Ole Miss to come out on top.

For LSU fans, the prediction is worth noting because this is the kind of game that can reshape the SEC race and, with it, the College Football Playoff picture. Georgias margin for error is always slim in conference play, and Ole Miss has already shown it can make life uncomfortable for the Bulldogs, which is why Kellys take adds another layer of intrigue to a matchup Tigers fans will be watching closely.
