Lane Kiffin hasn’t wasted any time making waves in Baton Rouge. Just weeks into his tenure as LSU’s head coach, he’s already stacking early recruiting wins.
Fourteen players signed during the Early Signing Period, including two elite 5-star prospects-Lamar Brown and Richard Anderson. And in a particularly bold move, Kiffin flipped three former Ole Miss commits to LSU.
That’s not just a strong start-it’s a statement.
But while the recruiting headlines are grabbing attention, the real intrigue is swirling around one position in particular: quarterback. Garrett Nussmeier is out of eligibility, and though Michael Van Buren showed flashes of potential late in the season, his inconsistency limited what LSU could do offensively. That leaves a big question mark under center heading into 2026-and Tiger fans are watching closely to see what Kiffin does next.
If history is any indication, Kiffin knows how to get the most out of his quarterbacks. Just look at what he did with Trinidad Chambliss at Ole Miss this season.
Chambliss, a transfer from Ferris State-where he led the program to a Division II national title-wasn’t even the starter to begin the year. But when Austin Simmons went down with an injury in mid-September, Chambliss stepped in and never looked back.
Now, with Kiffin at LSU and Chambliss potentially on the move, the idea of a reunion in Baton Rouge is gaining serious traction.
Chambliss addressed his future on Monday, and while he didn’t tip his hand, his comments certainly left the door open.
“I would have to consider what the best situation is for me. What I feel most comfortable with.
Who I trust the most, and just get a feel for every possibility really. There's a lot that goes into that.”
That’s a quarterback weighing his options-and LSU is very much in the mix.
Chambliss is awaiting word on whether he’ll receive a waiver from the NCAA for another year of eligibility. If granted, he’ll have a decision to make: return to Ole Miss, or explore a new opportunity, possibly with his former coach at LSU.
Kiffin, for his part, hasn’t exactly been subtle. A few weeks ago, he posted a cryptic message on social media featuring a Tiger emoji next to the Trinidad and Tobago flag.
Coincidence? Maybe.
But it certainly got the LSU fanbase buzzing.
And with good reason. Chambliss didn’t just fill in at quarterback-he thrived.
Since taking over as the starter, he’s only lost once. He’s thrown for over 3,000 yards with 18 touchdowns to just three interceptions, and added nearly 500 rushing yards and six more scores on the ground.
That’s not just solid production-it’s high-level quarterback play, especially considering where he came from and how quickly he adapted to SEC defenses.
LSU fans got a firsthand look at what Chambliss can do when he torched the Tigers back in September. In that game in Oxford, he accounted for 385 total yards-314 through the air and 71 on the ground-leading Ole Miss to a 24-19 win.
He was in control from start to finish, showing poise, mobility, and a strong command of the offense. That performance alone left a lasting impression on the LSU faithful.
Now, with Chambliss set to lead Ole Miss into the first round of the College Football Playoff against Tulane this Saturday, all eyes will be on what happens next. Will he stay in Oxford?
Will he jump into the portal? And if he does, will Kiffin try to bring him to Baton Rouge?
One thing’s clear: Kiffin is building something at LSU, and the quarterback position is still very much in play. If Chambliss becomes available, don’t be surprised if the Tigers make a serious push. After all, Kiffin’s track record with QBs is proven-and the chemistry with Chambliss is already there.
