Brian Kelly’s post-LSU landing spot may already be taking shape, and it could come from an unexpected place.
Kelly is working as a CBS Sports analyst right now, but that stopover may not last long. The former LSU coach has been connected to Rutgers, where the pressure is building on Greg Schiano after an 0-3 start. The Scarlet Knights are still hunting for their first win as Week 4 approaches, and their schedule is about to get a lot less forgiving with Indiana, Michigan and Penn State coming up next.
The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman reported that Kelly is “very, very motivated” to get back into coaching and said there is buzz around Rutgers as a possible destination. Feldman also pointed to the school’s ties to Kelly, noting that Rutgers president Bill Tate and athletic director Keli Zinn both came to New Jersey after working at LSU, where Kelly had been the Tigers’ coach.
“Another 60-something coaching retread who could find a Power 4 landing spot is former LSU and Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly,” Feldman wrote on Sept. 18. “The 64-year-old Boston native is very, very motivated to get back on the sidelines, we’re told.
“Rutgers president Bill Tate and athletic director Keli Zinn came to New Jersey after working at LSU, where Kelly had been the Tigers coach,” Feldman added.
“Kelly, who won more games at Notre Dame than any other coach, did fizzle out in Baton Rouge, but the Rutgers job would be a much different dynamic, and Kelly is very comfortable in the Northeast.”
Schiano’s situation is getting expensive fast. CBS Sports reported that Rutgers still owes him $22.5 million on his contract, and his buyout would top $17 million if the school decided to move on.
There is some financial relief built into the deal, though. Schiano has a mitigation clause that would offset some of what Rutgers would owe if the program hired another coach.
For now, Rutgers still has time to steady itself. But if the losses keep piling up, the noise around Schiano’s future figures to get louder - and Kelly’s name could keep coming up. Other jobs may open soon, too, with Florida State, Maryland, NC State and Baylor among the programs whose current coaches have been mentioned as hot seat candidates.
Kelly, a Massachusetts native, would also fit Rutgers more naturally than he did in Baton Rouge. It would still be a Power Four move, even if it doesn’t carry the same shine as LSU.

For LSU, the appeal is obvious. The Tigers are always in the market for elite quarterback talent, and Tabron is expected to visit soon while Texas A&M sorts through a season that has put the quarterback future back in the spotlight. LSU Secondary Concern Just Grew Ahead Of Texas A&M
LSUs secondary is entering the Texas A&M week with a thinner margin for error than usual, and the first injury report only sharpened the concern. Safety Tamarcus Cooley is listed as questionable, while cornerback JaKeem Jackson is doubtful, adding uncertainty to a defensive backfield that needs as much stability as it can get heading into a key conference matchup.
The availability picture does not stop there, either. Tight end TreyDez Green, safety Dashawn Spears and receiver Phillip Wright are all listed as out, with Spears reportedly done for the season after a torn ACL and Wright confirmed by coach Lane Kiffin as out for the year. The caveat, of course, is that these reports can shift before kickoff, as LSU has already seen with quarterback Sam Leavitts previous designation, but for now the Tigers are managing a list that is already longer than they would prefer. LSU Fans Will Love Whos Coming Back For Texas A&M
A familiar face is headed back to Baton Rouge for one of LSUs biggest home dates of the fall. Freddy, the German traveler who picked up social media attention during his U.S. trip, said he will be at Tiger Stadium when LSU hosts Texas A&M on Sept. 26, giving Tigers fans another reason to circle the matchup.
