College football’s Week 9 AP Top 25 brought the kind of shakeup voters love to make when chaos does the heavy lifting. With 30 percent of the top 10 taking losses, the ballot came back with a new look, a few bruised contenders, and one major surge at the top.
Miami held on to No. 1 and picked up more support than it had a week ago, jumping from 40 first-place votes to 59 after No. 2 BYU lost.
Ohio State, idle over the weekend, collected 10 first-place votes. The rest of the top five stayed the same, with Georgia at No.
3, Indiana at No. 4 and Notre Dame at No. 5.
Utah moved up to No. 6 and earned one first-place vote after taking over the top spot in the Big 12. UCLA checked in at No. 7, followed by BYU at No.
8, Kentucky at No. 9 and Alabama at No. 10.
Texas made the biggest leap in the rankings, climbing eight spots to No. 11 after knocking off Ole Miss. That win gave Arch Manning and the Longhorns the week’s best bump in the eyes of the pollsters. Ole Miss slid five spots to No. 12, while Texas Tech also dropped five to No. 13 after its loss at unranked Cincinnati.
Wake Forest landed at No. 14, LSU at No.
15, Tennessee at No. 16, Florida at No. 17 and Houston at No.
- SMU came in at No. 19, and Boise State and Northwestern tied at No.
- Arizona is No.
22, Missouri No. 23, Oklahoma State No. 24 and Wisconsin No.
Tennessee’s fall was especially notable after its big win over Alabama the week before. The Vols got handled by unranked South Carolina on the road, a setback that knocked them down five places. The source material noted that Tennessee can defend and run the ball, but needs more production at quarterback.
Houston dropped four spots after suffering its second loss, this time a close one at Utah. The Cougars’ other defeat came in a two-point game at Texas Tech, so both losses have come against strong Big 12 opponents.
BYU took the sharpest tumble among the highest-ranked teams, falling six spots after a loss at unranked UCF. That result pushed the Cougars back behind Notre Dame, which they had beaten last week.
Wisconsin crashed the rankings after spending the season unranked. The Badgers beat USC at home by three touchdowns, improved to 5-2 and knocked the Trojans out of the poll. Iowa and USC were the notable teams to fall out this week after road losses on Saturday.
Voters also gave votes to several teams that just missed the cut: Iowa with 76, New Mexico with 41, Cincinnati with 11, Oregon State with 10, South Carolina with 8, Minnesota with 7, USC with 7, UTSA with 1 and Virginia Tech with 1.

Lane Kiffin Quietly Added An Offensive Voice As LSU Feud Escalates
As LSU's offseason and early-season storylines kept spinning, Lane Kiffin revealed that the Tigers quietly added Nate Carroll as an offensive analyst before the season, a move that had not been publicly disclosed at the time. Carroll, who brings NFL coaching experience and comes from the Pete Carroll coaching tree, has been helping LSU's offensive staff during games, giving the program an extra experienced voice behind the scenes.
The timing adds another layer to a situation already marked by legal friction between LSU and SEC commissioner Greg Sankey over the schools recruiting practices and Kiffins comments. With the public focus elsewhere, the quiet addition of Carroll underscores how much of college football now unfolds away from the spotlight, even as the larger LSU-Sankey dispute continues to simmer. LSU Just Got A New Reason To Worry About Alabamas Passing Game
Alabamas passing game has been dealing with a hit since the injury to Ryan Coleman-Williams in the Georgia game, and LSU now has another name to plan for ahead of Nov. 7. Kalen DeBoer said the wide receiver is expected back for that matchup, a development that matters because Coleman-Williams had already been part of the offense before the injury sidelined him for recent games.
For LSU, the timing is hardly ideal. Alabama has had to adjust without one of its receiving options, but DeBoers comments point to a possible boost when the Tigers arrive, with Coleman-Williams expected to be available and, in the coachs view, ready to matter right away. [Read more 🡒]
LSU Fans Have A Massive Recruiting Decision Closing In
The wait is almost over for one of the more closely watched recruiting battles LSU has been part of this cycle. Four-star small forward Asa Montgomery, a top prospect in the 2027 class, has set his college commitment announcement for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. ET, and the Tigers are among the schools still in the mix after hosting him on official visits. He is weighing LSU against Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and UConn, a group that reflects just how far his stock has climbed.
Montgomerys rise has made this one worth tracking well beyond the usual early recruiting buzz. Evaluators view him as a versatile wing with real upside at the next level, the kind of player programs can build around if the fit and development plan line up. For LSU, landing a player with that profile would be another sign the staff can win national-level recruiting fights, but for now the only certainty is that a major decision is right around the corner.
