Nick Saban's Return Adds Even More Buzz To Alabama's GameDay Weekend

Kirk Herbstreit relishes a personal dining engagement with Nick Saban's family ahead of a historic College GameDay broadcast from inside Alabama's renowned Coleman Coliseum.

Kirk Herbstreit is getting a little extra time with Nick Saban before College GameDay hits Tuscaloosa on Saturday.

The ESPN analyst said he’ll have dinner with Saban’s family on Friday night ahead of the show, which will air from inside Coleman Coliseum because of the weather rolling into town. “But it’s cool that we’ll be there with Coach Saban back home.

We’re gonna have a nice dinner there on Friday evening with the Sabans. Looking forward to that,” Herbstreit said.

He didn’t reveal where the dinner will be held or offer any other details.

Herbstreit brought up the dinner after talking about the show’s adjusted setup for Saturday morning. ESPN announced Thursday that GameDay will be staged from Alabama’s basketball arena as Isaias brings rain and wind toward Tuscaloosa.

“With the winds and the rain, they’ve made that announcement,” Herbstreit said. “We’re going to welcome everybody to come out to Coleman Coliseum and make it a wild atmosphere inside.”

Coleman Coliseum seats more than 15,000 and has previously hosted the basketball version of GameDay, but this will be the first time the football show originates there. It’s also the second indoor broadcast for the crew this season, following the move into LSU’s student union because of lightning.

Saturday’s show runs from 9 a.m. to noon ET, and fans can start lining up at the north and east entrances at 6:15 a.m. ET. Former Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young, now with the Carolina Panthers, will serve as the guest picker.

Herbstreit’s connection with Saban goes back to the coach’s days at Michigan State. On The Dan Patrick Show in April, Herbstreit said, “I’ve known him since he was the head coach at Michigan State. So, I’ve known him for almost 25 years,” Herbstreit said.

The Ohio State alum has called each of Saban’s six national title teams at Alabama and has said Saban is his favorite coach to cover. When Saban retired in January 2024 after a Rose Bowl loss to Michigan, Herbstreit noted that the coach finished 199-16 from 2008 to 2023.

ESPN later added Saban to the GameDay desk that fall, and he now works alongside Herbstreit, who is celebrating 30 years on the show. Herbstreit said Saban even seeks out his feedback after segments. “But he wants to be coached like he’s a player,” Herbstreit said.

Alabama will host GameDay for the 22nd time, trailing only Ohio State’s 26 appearances. Saban coached the Crimson Tide for 17 seasons, and Saturday’s broadcast will put him back on campus just hours before his former team meets Georgia.

LSU Could Get Caught In The SECs Next Transfer Fight

Lane Kiffin has already made it clear where he stands on the SECs latest transfer debate, and the LSU coach is not enthusiastic about the idea of making players sit out a year when they move from one league school to another. The proposal under discussion would amount to a year-in-residency mandate, part of the conferences broader self-governance push, and it has quickly become one of the more divisive issues on the table as SEC presidents prepare to meet and talk it through.

For LSU, the stakes go beyond the policy itself. Kiffins public criticism reflects a bigger concern around competitive balance, since a rule like that could make it harder for SEC programs to add familiar transfers while potentially sending players to other conferences instead. The discussion is still in motion, but if the league moves forward, it could reshape how LSU and the rest of the SEC navigate the transfer market. [Read more 🡒]

LSU Finally Broke Through At Kentucky But One Issue Still Looms

LSUs simulated trip to Kentucky turned into a much-needed response, as the Tigers erased a 10-point halftime deficit and came away with a 20-13 win. The defense steadied after the break and kept Kentucky off the board in the second half, while Caden Durham provided the decisive fourth-quarter touchdown to finish off a game that had started with the Tigers on their heels.

Sam Leavitts stat line showed both the promise and the problem. He completed 28 of 39 passes for 316 yards and a touchdown, but the three interceptions kept LSU from making the game feel comfortable for long stretches. The comeback was encouraging, and the result mattered, but the turnover issue still sits there as the main thing to clean up moving forward. [Read more 🡒]

Patrick Peterson Just Gave LSU Fans Another Reason To Celebrate

LSUs proud defensive tradition got another nod this week when the Southeastern Conference unveiled its 2026 Football Legends Class, and Patrick Peterson was among the names to be honored. For Tiger fans, it is a familiar reminder of how dominant Peterson was in Baton Rouge from 2008 to 2010, when he piled up major awards and finished his college run as one of the most decorated corners in school history.

Petersons LSU rsum still carries plenty of weight because what he became after leaving campus only added to the legend. He went on to a 13-season NFL career and earned multiple Pro Bowl selections, giving the Tigers another marquee figure to celebrate as the SEC prepares to recognize its latest group of greats.
