Mississippi State Rocked By Sudden Coaching Loss

After a brief stint at Mississippi State, Bush Hamdan is on the move again-this time to the NFL sidelines in Miami.

Bush Hamdan is on the move again-this time heading back to the NFL.

Just a little over two months after joining Mississippi State’s staff, Hamdan has accepted the role of quarterbacks coach for the Miami Dolphins. It’s a quick turnaround for a coach who was expected to play a key role in shaping the Bulldogs’ offense under new head coach Jeff Lebby.

Hamdan was brought on in December as Mississippi State’s associate head coach for offense and wide receivers coach. He was seen as a significant addition, especially after two seasons as Kentucky’s offensive coordinator. But now, with Hamdan heading to Miami, Mississippi State is left with a key vacancy to fill just weeks before spring practices begin.

The timing isn't ideal, but there are internal options on the table. Desmond Lindsey, who was hired in late December as an assistant wide receivers coach, could be a candidate for promotion.

Lindsey comes with solid experience-he was UTEP’s outside wide receivers coach in 2025 and spent four seasons at Southern Miss before that. If Mississippi State wants to maintain continuity heading into spring, elevating Lindsey might be the most seamless move.

On the field, the Bulldogs will be looking to retool their receiving corps after losing record-setting wideout Brenen Thompson, who exhausted his eligibility following a monster season. Still, there’s plenty of talent returning.

Anthony Evans III and Ayden Williams, who finished second and third in receiving yards last season, are both back. The team also added depth and speed through the transfer portal, bringing in Missouri’s Marquis Johnson and Oklahoma’s Zion Ragins.

Add in young names like Sanfrisco Magee and Ricky Johnson-both of whom have breakout potential-and there’s a solid foundation for whoever steps into the wide receivers coach role.

As for Hamdan, this marks his return to the NFL, where he previously served as the Atlanta Falcons’ quarterbacks coach in 2017. He’ll now join a Dolphins staff led by newly hired head coach Jeff Hafley, tasked with developing a talented quarterback room in Miami.

For Mississippi State, the challenge now is twofold: find the right replacement quickly and keep the momentum going as they gear up for spring ball.
