Texas A&M coach Mike Elko had a blunt way of describing the SEC’s showdown with LSU over the conference’s removal threat, and he framed it like a family dispute that got out of hand before the parent stepped in.
After the SEC threatened to kick LSU out for a “lack of institutional control over the athletics program,” the league later pulled back from the scheduled vote and backed off the threat. That shift opened the door for plenty of reaction, and Elko gave one of the most memorable takes.
“This is a little bit like the son figuring out where the limits are until Dad comes home and raises his voice, and then the son goes, ‘I was just kidding; I didn’t mean any of that.’" said Elko, via On3's CarterKarels. "I think that’s what you’re seeing.
LSU will be in the SEC... This is just a little bit of parenting going on right now."
In Elko’s view, the SEC still holds the power in the relationship with LSU, and the latest flare-up was simply a test of how far the Tigers could push.
The controversy stemmed from Lane Kiffin’s decision to pursue adding NFL players to an already loaded roster. The former pros had been attending practice and were hoping to play in the season’s first games, even as the SEC was handing down strict punishments and voting against NFL players in the NCAA.
The move wasn’t illegal, according to the source of the dispute. A Baton Rouge judge had issued a temporary restraining order for the class of 2022 athletes, giving them another year of eligibility and allowing them to return to the NCAA and transfer in during the window. Kiffin was simply the first to act on it.
That led to the SEC responding with the threat of serious consequences, including the possibility of removing LSU from the conference. After that, Kiffin backed off and did not put the two former pros, Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, on the roster for the season opener vs. Clemson.
The back-and-forth has continued, but with no vote scheduled to take place on Thursday, the fight inside the conference appears to be easing. For Elko, though, it all came down to a little “parenting.”
