LSU Tigers Stunned by McNeese St. in First Season Loss

LSU's undefeated run comes to a surprising halt as McNeese St. pulls off a shocking 7-6 victory in a nail-biting showdown.

The McNeese St. Cowboys pulled off a remarkable upset, ending the LSU Tigers' perfect run with a narrow 7-6 victory.

The Tigers, who were off to their best start under coach Jay Johnson with a 9-0 record, now face their first setback of the season. While this loss might sting, it’s a reminder of the unpredictable nature of baseball. Midweek games can be tricky, and this one was no exception.

LSU opted for a bullpen day, starting freshman right-hander Marco Paz. Paz, a highly-touted recruit from Carrollton, Texas, has shown flashes of potential, but his inexperience was evident.

His ERA climbed to 12.27 after allowing four runs on just one hit over 1.2 innings. While he struggled with control, issuing two walks and hitting a batter, he did manage to record two strikeouts.

That rocky second inning proved to be pivotal, as LSU struggled to regain their footing. Consistency was an issue on both offense and defense throughout the game.

On the mound, redshirt sophomore Deven Sheerin stood out. After transferring to LSU and missing last season due to injury, Sheerin has returned with impressive form.

His aggressive pitching style, featuring a fastball that reaches the upper-90s and a sharp slider, has been effective. Over five innings this season, he’s yet to allow a hit, walking two and striking out 10.

Offensively, Zach Yorke and John Pearson were the bright spots, each hitting home runs. Pearson was the only LSU player, and one of just two in the entire game, to notch more than one hit.

Looking ahead, LSU will face the Dartmouth Big Green this Friday at 6:30 pm CT at Alex Box Stadium, followed by games against the Northeastern Huskies. This weekend series offers a chance for the Tigers to bounce back and continue their strong season.
