LSU’s comeback effort at Ole Miss took a hit early in the fourth quarter when Trey'Dez Green left the game with what appeared to be a knee injury.
The Tigers entered the final period trailing by three after a brutal first half, one in which Trinidad Chambliss looked unstoppable and Ole Miss fed off the energy in the building. LSU settled in after halftime and started swinging the game back in its direction, turning what had looked like a potential blowout into a live finish.
Then came the play that changed the feel of LSU’s offense. On third-and-5 to open the fourth quarter, Sam Leavitt went to his top target, and Green answered with a 19-yard gain.
But the tight end was hit high and low on the catch, stayed down afterward, and was checked by the medical staff, who appeared to be focused on his knee. He then limped off with help from trainers.
According to the LSU Football Radio Broadcast, Green was doubtful to return with a “right leg injury”. After that designation, he was carted off the field and taken to the locker room.
If Green can’t come back, LSU will have to find production elsewhere. The Tigers do have depth at tight end, but most of those options are more valuable as blockers than as the kind of matchup problem Green gives them.
Green left the game with four catches for 60 yards, which led LSU in receiving at the time of his exit. He’s also carrying bigger stakes beyond this game as a projected 1st round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
