The curtain has closed on another challenging season for LSU men's basketball. The Tigers, seeded 16th, put up a spirited fight but ultimately fell short against the 9th-seeded Kentucky, losing 87-82 in the opening round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament in Nashville.
This marks LSU's second consecutive losing season under Coach Matt McMahon, wrapping up with a 15-17 record and a 3-15 finish in the SEC regular season. Kentucky, now 20-12, advances to face Missouri next.
As the dust settles, all eyes turn to McMahon's future with the Tigers. With LSU's athletic department managing financial commitments from previous coaching contracts, the decision on McMahon's tenure looms large.
Despite the loss, the Tigers showed resilience. Senior guard Max Mackinnon led the charge with an impressive 28 points on 11-of-17 shooting.
Junior center Mike Nwoko added a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, though a late turnover proved costly. Freshman Jalen Reece, stepping up for injured Dedan Thomas Jr., contributed 11 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.
Senior forward Marquel Sutton also chipped in with 11 points and seven boards.
Absent from the lineup was forward/center Robert Miller III, sidelined due to a team rules violation. The Tigers faced their share of adversity this season, yet they consistently battled on the court.
For Kentucky, Otega Oweh led with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Brandon Garrison and Denze Aberdeen added 17 and 16 points respectively.
