LSU's women's basketball team is making waves once again, advancing to their fourth consecutive Sweet 16 after a dominant 101-47 victory over Texas Tech. This wasn't just any win; it was a historic one. The 54-point margin marks LSU's largest victory against an AP Top-25 team, and the Tigers set an NCAA single-season record by hitting the 100-point mark for the 16th time this season.
The spotlight was on Flau’Jae Johnson, the lone senior from LSU’s 2023 national championship team. In her final game at the PMAC, she delivered a stellar performance with 24 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Her partner in crime, Mikaylah Williams, matched her point for point, adding 7 rebounds to her 24-point tally. Together, they outscored the entire Texas Tech squad.
From the get-go, Texas Tech was on the back foot. Freshman ZaKiyah Johnson set the tone by scoring just 19 seconds into the game. LSU quickly surged to a 10-0 lead, and the gap only widened, reaching as much as 56 points.
It was a team effort for LSU, with all nine players contributing to the scoreboard. Five players, including Flau’Jae and Mikaylah, hit double digits.
Kate Koval notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Jada Richard’s late three-pointer pushed LSU over the century mark. Amiya Joyner provided a spark off the bench with her own double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
While March is all about surviving and advancing, LSU is doing so with flair. Their 54-point win over Texas Tech, coupled with a 116-58 triumph over Jacksonville, places them in elite company. They're now the fourth team, across both men's and women's tournaments, to win multiple games by 50 points in the same tournament-a feat previously achieved only by UConn’s championship teams in 2010, 2015, and 2016.
Next up, LSU heads to Sacramento for the Sweet 16, where they'll face Duke, the #3 seed in the Sacramento 2 Regional. The Tigers have already bested the Blue Devils once this season, with a decisive 93-77 victory in December.
As they prepare for Friday's clash at 6:30 P.M. CT, LSU fans are hopeful for a repeat performance.
