LSU's men's basketball team faced a tough exit in the SEC Tournament, bowing out with an 87-82 loss to Kentucky. Despite the game being played in Nashville, the overwhelming presence of Kentucky fans made it feel like an away game for the Tigers. Yet, LSU's resilience was on full display.
The game was a rollercoaster, with LSU repeatedly clawing back after Kentucky's scoring surges. However, as the clock ticked down to the final 10 minutes, the cracks began to show.
Brandon Garrison, who had only hit two 3-pointers all season, found his rhythm in the second half, sinking two crucial threes and scoring 11 of his 17 points to help Kentucky pull away. Otega Oweh was the driving force for the Wildcats, racking up 23 points and proving difficult for LSU to contain. He was efficient from the line, hitting seven of his 10 free throws.
For LSU, Max Mackinnon was the standout performer, especially in the latter stages. His movement on and off the ball was electric, and he poured in 28 points, with 18 coming after the break. Despite his heroics, the Tigers struggled with shooting and communication down the stretch.
LSU knew they needed to hit at least 80 points to have a shot at victory, given their defensive struggles. They managed 82, but without their top defender, Robert Miller III, who was sidelined due to a team rules violation, their defense was further compromised.
This forced them to lean heavily on Mike Nwoko, who delivered a strong performance. He stayed disciplined defensively, committing only three fouls, and notched a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Nwoko and Mackinnon were the offensive pillars for LSU, consistently stepping up throughout conference play. Both players were instrumental in the first half, with Mackinnon hitting a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to keep LSU within striking distance. The Tigers shot 48.5% from the field in the first half, staying within three points as they headed into the final 20 minutes.
However, free throw struggles continued to plague LSU, as they converted only 13 of 20 attempts. Kentucky's quick-paced style contrasted sharply with LSU's more deliberate approach, with point guard Jalen Reece orchestrating the offense. Reece flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 11 points, six rebounds, and seven assists.
A memorable moment came from Pablo Tamba, whose emphatic dunk led to a Flagrant 1 foul. The foul was incidental but followed the rulebook due to contact with Malachi Moreno, who had previously sunk a buzzer-beater against LSU. This time, Moreno was held to just four points.
Denzel Aberdeen proved a thorn in LSU's side once more, adding 16 points, while Marquel Sutton contributed 11 points and seven rebounds to Kentucky's effort.
With this loss, LSU's season comes to a close, marking the end of head coach Matt McMahon's fourth year with just three SEC wins. The Tigers will look to regroup and come back stronger next season.
