LSU May Be Weighing A Surprising Lamar Brown Role Change

Deck: LSU Tigers' Lamar Brown teases a strategic shift that could bolster their offensive line, offering a glimpse of new team dynamics.

LSU may have a new wrinkle brewing with Lamar Brown, and it came courtesy of an Instagram post that had Tigers fans doing a double take.

Brown, the five-star freshman who arrived in Baton Rouge as one of the most intriguing players in the class, has spent his time so far on the defensive line. But a post on his second account hinted that his next stop could be the other side of the ball.

He shared a photo of himself edited into a Tigers No. 3 jersey and added “#2waydemonisback” with a gorilla emoji. That’s about as loud a hint as a social media post can give.

Nothing is official yet, and the only real confirmation will come if LSU says so or if Brown lines up across the offensive front in a game. Still, the idea isn’t far-fetched. LSU’s offensive line needs depth more urgently than the defensive front, which makes the possibility worth watching.

So far, Brown hasn’t had much room to break into the rotation on defense. Princewill Umanmielen, Jordan Ross and Dylan Carpenter have handled most of the snaps and have been effective. Brown did, however, pick up his first career sack against Auburn last week.

Through 75 snaps, Pro Football Focus has graded him mostly average, which fits the reality of a freshman getting his first taste of college football. Brown was the third-overall recruit in the 247Sports composite rankings, and he’s listed at 6-foot-5 and 282 pounds on LSU’s roster. That frame makes sense for a defensive end, but it would be light for an offensive lineman, where most LSU players in that group sit between 300 and 320 pounds.

If LSU does try him on offense, left guard looks like the spot that could eventually be his. That position has been a problem area, and the Tigers’ offensive line has generally underperformed.

The numbers back that up. LSU is allowing 5.75 tackles for loss per game, which ranks 101st out of 138 teams nationally, and it has given up 13 sacks, ranking 54th. Those figures aren’t identical, but together they paint the same picture: the line hasn’t been where LSU wants it to be.

For now, Brown’s post is just that - a post. But it’s enough to make this one of the more interesting developments to monitor as the season goes on. However it shakes out, LSU has a very exciting player on its hands.

LSU Just Got A Stunning Title Vote Before Alabama Week

Nick Saban rarely hands out compliments lightly, which is why his latest national title pick turned heads around Baton Rouge. With LSU sitting at 6-2 and No. 15 in the rankings, the former Alabama coach pointed to the Tigers as a sleeper candidate to win it all, citing a team that has paired strong scoring with a defense that has done its part. Six of LSU's wins have come by 20 or more points, a sign that when the Tigers are rolling, they can separate from opponents in a hurry.

The timing makes the endorsement even more interesting with Alabama coming in at 6-2 and ranked No. 10 for a matchup that already had plenty riding on it. Saban did flag quarterback Sam Leavitt's turnover issues as a possible obstacle, a reminder that LSU still has questions to answer before any championship talk gets serious. Still, getting that kind of vote of confidence from Saban just before Alabama week adds another layer to a game that was already going to carry plenty of weight. [Read more 🡒]

LSU Faces An Early Recruiting Test In A Battle Fans Will Notice

The early stages of B.J. LaFells recruitment already have a familiar LSU feel to them. The son of former Tigers receiver Brandon LaFell, the 2029 prospect has picked up offers from LSU and Notre Dame, along with other programs, and the Tigers are leaning into a pitch that combines family ties with a long track record of developing NFL receivers.

For LSU, this is the kind of battle fans will notice because it reaches beyond the usual recruiting chatter and into legacy territory. Notre Dame gives him a national alternative with its own appeal, and the process is still just beginning, with coaching relationships and development opportunities likely to matter as much as any school name on the offer sheet. LSU Has A Bye But Saturday Still Carries Huge Stakes

LSU may not be taking the field this Saturday, but the Tigers still have plenty to watch from afar as the weekends biggest games ripple through the SEC and beyond. Auburns trip to Ole Miss is one of the more intriguing matchups on the slate, and the result could shape how the conference race looks heading into the next stretch. Elsewhere, Minnesota at Indiana and Florida against Georgia add even more weight to a day that could shift standings, rankings and the national conversation.

For LSU, the value of a bye week is never just rest. It is also a chance to see how the teams around them handle pressure, especially in games that carry real implications for perception as much as for the standings. With players to watch and recent form under the microscope in several of these matchups, Saturday offers a useful measuring stick for where the Tigers fit in the larger picture, even without snapping the ball themselves.
