Jerry Stovall, one of LSU’s most decorated football figures and a former Cardinals safety, has died at 85, according to multiple reports Monday, Aug. 31.
Stovall’s LSU career stretched from 1960-62, and he packed just about everything into those three seasons. The West Monroe, La., native lined up at halfback, defensive back and returner, and he also handled punting duties. By the time he was done, he had become one of the most versatile players in school history.
His senior year in 1962 was the peak. Stovall was a unanimous All-American, earned SEC Most Valuable Player honors and finished second in Heisman Trophy voting behind Oregon State quarterback Terry Baker.
He also helped LSU capture the SEC championship in 1961. Over his college career, he piled up more than 1,000 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, added 452 receiving yards and a touchdown, intercepted seven passes and averaged 42.1 yards per punt in 1962.
LSU retired Stovall’s No. 21 in 2018, placing it among the small group of football jerseys honored by the school. He was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1981 and into the College Football Hall of Fame as part of the 2010 class.
The St. Louis Cardinals made Stovall the No. 2 overall pick in the 1963 NFL Draft, and he shifted to the secondary in the pros. He spent nine seasons with the Cardinals, collecting three Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro recognition.
After his playing days ended, Stovall moved into coaching and later returned to LSU as an assistant under longtime coach Charles McClendon. When Bo Rein died in a plane crash before the 1980 season, Stovall was chosen to take over his alma mater.
He coached LSU for three seasons and went 22-21-2. The best of those came in 1982, when the Tigers finished 8-3-1, knocked off several ranked teams and reached the Orange Bowl.

Stovall was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation Coach of the Year, then eventually moved on from the sideline and into administration. He became Louisiana Tech’s athletic director beginning in 1990.
Later, he returned to Baton Rouge and served as president and CEO of the Baton Rouge Area Sports Foundation, staying active in Louisiana sports and civic affairs.
