LSU Has A Receiver Alabama's Secondary Can't Afford To Misread

Alabamas defensive vulnerability could be a golden opportunity for LSU's Jackson Harris to make a significant impact in their upcoming clash.

LSU wide receiver Jackson Harris is walking into Saturday with the kind of profile that can stress an Alabama defense in a hurry.

His breakout against Auburn was loud enough to get attention on its own: 178 receiving yards, two touchdowns and nine catches in LSU’s 38-17 win. But the bigger takeaway was how he did it.

Harris didn’t just win on go routes and deep shots. He turned an intermediate dig into a 70-yard touchdown, showing how quickly a routine completion can become a chunk play.

That matters against Alabama, because the Crimson Tide have had real issues keeping the top on their pass defense this season. Through eight games, they’ve given up 25 completions of at least 20 yards, more than three per game.

They’re also allowing 222.4 passing yards per game and 7.8 yards per attempt. The numbers point to a secondary that has been vulnerable when opponents are willing to push the ball.

Harris fits right into that opening. His season line tells the story of a receiver who keeps producing explosive gains: 36 catches for 634 yards and seven touchdowns, with a 17.6-yard average per reception.

That kind of output isn’t new for him either. Before arriving at LSU, he spent the 2025 season at Hawai’i and averaged 19.7 yards per catch there.

What makes Harris especially dangerous is the way he can hurt a defense without forcing LSU to live on deep balls. He can separate on in-breaking routes, catch it in space and do the rest himself. Against Auburn, that showed up over and over in a performance that may have been his best of the season, even if it wasn’t some one-off burst out of nowhere.

Alabama’s pass defense does have answers, though, and they’re not small ones. The Crimson Tide have intercepted 12 passes, which puts them among the nation’s best at creating turnovers through the air. They’ve also shown they can disguise coverages and punish quarterbacks who get greedy.

That creates the central tension in this matchup. LSU can attack Alabama where it has been leaky, especially in the intermediate game over the middle and toward the right side. But if the Tigers get too aggressive, Alabama’s ball-hawking secondary can flip the script fast.

So Harris doesn’t have to duplicate the Auburn stat line for LSU to get value out of him. He just has to keep forcing Alabama to account for his vertical threat while also punishing them underneath. If that happens, the Tigers can make the Crimson Tide defend every blade of grass - and maybe open things up for the rest of the receiving corps, too.

LSU Suddenly Has Another Big Alabama Availability Concern

LSU is still dealing with a thin margin for error heading into its matchup with Alabama, and the latest availability report did not do the Tigers many favors. Linebacker Whit Weeks remains doubtful for the game, while tight end TreyDez Green is listed as questionable because of a knee injury, adding more uncertainty to a roster already missing several players on season-ending injuries.

Alabama, meanwhile, got a cleaner update on its side of the ledger, with receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams and center Racin Delgatty both moved from questionable to probable. For LSU, the concern is less about one injury and more about how many moving parts remain in flux this late in the week, especially against a rival that is trending in a more stable direction. LSU Could Get A Huge Boost For Alabama At The Perfect Time

The timing could hardly be better for LSU. Tiger Stadium is set to host Alabama in a Week 10 SEC matchup after a bye week for both teams, and the Tigers appear to be getting a key piece back in tight end Trey'Dez Green after his injury absence. For an LSU offense that can use every available weapon in a game of this size, his return adds another layer to a matchup that already carries plenty of weight.

LSU's defense will also have a chance to lean into one of its biggest strengths against an Alabama quarterback who has taken plenty of punishment this season. Keelon Russell has been sacked 22 times, and the Tigers have built a reputation around getting after the passer. With both teams still chasing playoff positioning, this one in Baton Rouge has the feel of more than just another SEC showdown. [Read more 🡒]

LSU Fans Have Several Week 10 Games Worth Watching Closely

Week 10 brings a slate that should keep LSU fans glued to the scoreboard even before the Tigers take the field, with several matchups carrying real weight for the playoff race and the national rankings. Utah-BYU, Texas-Missouri, Ohio State-Oregon, Georgia-Ole Miss and Miami-Notre Dame all have something at stake, whether it is a chance to improve a resume, protect a spot near the top of the poll or survive a tricky conference test that could reshape the postseason picture.

For LSU supporters, the appeal is not just the quality of the games but the ripple effect they could have on the road ahead. Injuries to key players and the way each team handles those absences could matter as much as the matchup itself, especially with so many contenders clustered together and every result carrying extra weight. By Saturday night, the Tigers may have a clearer sense of which teams are separating themselves and which ones are about to make the playoff conversation even messier. [Read more 🡒]
