LSU’s backfield got a little more muscle this offseason, and that’s exactly what the Tigers were shopping for.
Dilin Jones arrives from Wisconsin as a redshirt sophomore with the kind of build LSU needed to complement its more explosive runners. At 5-foot-11 and 211 pounds, he brings a sturdier inside presence to a room that already includes Caden Durham and Harlem Berry.
Jones isn’t coming in as a change-of-pace piece. He’s built to handle the dirty work between the tackles.
His track record at Wisconsin shows why LSU wanted him. Last season, Jones opened as the Badgers’ starter and held that job for the first seven games before a turf toe injury against Ohio State ended his year.
In those seven starts, he ran for 300 yards and two touchdowns on 76 carries. Over two seasons in Madison, he totaled 388 yards and two scores on 88 carries.
The injury cut short what had been a promising stretch. Jones started the first seven games of the 2025 season and got rolling right away, opening with 14 carries for 73 yards against Miami (Ohio).
He scored his first career touchdown on a 1-yard run the next week against Middle Tennessee, then followed with 63 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries against Michigan. He also logged 25 yards on five carries at Alabama and added 69 yards on 16 carries against Iowa.
He finished that season with nine catches for 21 yards.
Before that, he spent his freshman year as a reserve. In 2024, Jones appeared in three games for Wisconsin, seeing action against South Dakota, Purdue and Rutgers.
He ran 16 times for 88 yards, with his best game coming against Purdue, when he carried seven times for 65 yards and broke off a 47-yard run. His collegiate debut came against South Dakota, when he had four carries for 14 yards.
Jones was one of the more coveted backs in the Class of 2024. A consensus 4-star prospect, he was ranked by ESPN.com as the nation’s No. 6 overall running back prospect and rated by Rivals composite as the No. 12 overall running back in the country.
At Our Lady of Good Counsel in Maryland, he piled up more than 2,100 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns over his final two seasons. He was twice named Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Player of the Year and also competed in track and wrestling.
LSU’s scouting report on him is straightforward: he’s a lead-back type with size, patience behind his blockers and the footwork to keep moving north-south. That fits the profile of a physical option the Tigers can lean on when they want a more punishing run game.
Jones also has a history against LSU-area competition. On Sept. 2, 2022, he rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns in Our Lady of Good Counsel’s 38-35 win over Catholic High in Baton Rouge.
