Louisiana’s high school football season opens with a quarterback matchup built for attention: Knox Kiffin against Colton Nussmeier.
Archbishop Rummel heads to University High on Friday, Sept. 4, for a 7 p.m. ET kickoff at the Cub Complex, and both teams will be leaning on offseason transfers making their first starts.
Kiffin, a three-star quarterback and the son of LSU head coach Lane Kiffin, now runs the show at U-High. Nussmeier, a four-star Georgia commit and the younger brother of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and former LSU star Garrett Nussmeier, is set to debut for the Raiders.
Kiffin arrived at U-High from Oxford High School in Mississippi after his father took the LSU job. At Oxford, he completed 67-of-114 passes for 1,236 yards and 14 touchdowns against two interceptions, helping the Chargers reach the Class 7A state semifinals. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound quarterback already has several offers, including from Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Missouri and California.
It’s a big weekend for the Kiffin family. Lane Kiffin and LSU open their season Saturday, Sept. 5, against Clemson. This is Lane Kiffin’s first season with LSU after leaving Ole Miss last year following six seasons with the Rebels.
Nussmeier’s path to Baton Rouge came with a detour. He joined Archbishop Rummel after being ruled ineligible to play at Denton Ryan High School in Texas.
Before a season-ending knee injury last year, he threw for 1,390 yards and 12 touchdowns with just one interception, while also rushing 45 times for 278 yards and three scores. He committed to Kirby Smart and Georgia on June 5, picking the Bulldogs over offers from LSU, Alabama, Indiana and Auburn among others.
The Nussmeier name already carries plenty of weight in Louisiana. Garrett Nussmeier spent two seasons as LSU’s starting quarterback before moving on to the Kansas City Chiefs. Their father, Doug, is the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints and also spent time as a quarterback in the NFL.
U-High enters the opener off a 2025 season that ended 10-3, with one of those losses coming against Archbishop Rummel. The Cubs also brought in another Oxford transfer in wide receiver Kevin Smith Jr., whose father joined LSU’s coaching staff as assistant head coach and running backs coach after three seasons at Ole Miss.
Knox Kiffin already knows Smith, who had 783 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last season at Oxford. U-High also added three-star running back Caiden Bellard, who rushed for 1,532 yards and 21 touchdowns last season.
The Cubs got a tune-up in the 2026 Capital City Kickoff Jamboree on Aug. 28, but Catholic shut them out 20-0. According to William Weathers of Geaux Preps, U-High managed just 19 yards in the first half and 104 yards total.
Archbishop Rummel finished 8-5 in 2025 and comes in with plenty of talent. The Raiders opened their preseason jamboree by beating St. Paul’s 35-17 after trailing 17-6 at halftime, with running backs Jaden Terrance and Coryan Hawkins combining for 250 rushing yards.
Rummel’s history is loaded, too. Ja’Marr Chase starred there before becoming an elite LSU receiver and later an All-Pro with the Cincinnati Bengals. The school also produced former Chicago Bears safety Craig Steltz, former Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Troy Kropog, tight end Cathan Carter, wide receiver Cyril Grayson, Ashton Stamps and Logan Diggs.
The program owns three state championships, winning in 2012, 2013 and 2019, and Nussmeier is being counted on as the next quarterback to chase another title.
