Bryce Underwood’s time at Michigan has not unfolded the way anyone around the program expected, and the situation is now worth watching heading into the offseason. According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Michigan benched Underwood against Penn State and plans to start Tommy Carr against Indiana.
That does not automatically mean Underwood will hit the transfer portal. But if he does decide a fresh start is the answer, the market could get complicated quickly.
Underwood arrived in Ann Arbor after one of the more dramatic recruiting battles in recent memory, with Michigan eventually winning out after an NIL package that reportedly tops $10 million. The next step has been tougher than the hype suggested, which is why any portal chatter around him would land as a major storyline.
LSU stands out right away because Underwood originally committed there before Michigan pulled off the flip. With Lane Kiffin now in Baton Rouge, the Tigers could make sense as a place for a reset.
Underwood spoke warmly about LSU in a May 2025 interview with “Kickin’ It With Dee,” via LSU Tigers on SI. “It’s nothing but love at LSU,” Underwood noted. “They gave a bunch of support.
“The atmosphere is insane. It was a crazy experience that I loved being around.”
Miami would also have to be mentioned. The Hurricanes have made a habit of chasing the top quarterback in the portal, and Underwood would fit right into that pattern after previous transfer pickups like Cam Ward and Darian Mensah.
Texas Tech is another program that belongs in the mix. The Red Raiders thought they had their quarterback answer in Brendan Sorsby before a gambling scandal changed that plan, and they figure to be back in the market this offseason. Underwood would still be a Power Four fit, and Lubbock would not bring quite the same level of pressure he faced at Michigan.
Georgia is worth keeping on the board too. The Bulldogs do not have a clear long-term answer behind Gunner Stockton, and Kirby Smart had looked to Jared Curtis as the next piece before Vanderbilt flipped him late in the recruiting process. Underwood could work in Georgia’s run-heavy offense, though the program has not shown much appetite for a bidding war at quarterback in the portal.
If the biggest powers pass, Kentucky could become a real name to watch. A pairing with head coach Will Stein would give Underwood a fresh start, and Stein already knows him from Oregon’s previous recruiting push. The Wildcats would likely need help from elsewhere to get into the race, but the fit is there.

LSU's SEC Fight Just Raised A New Problem For Will Wade
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has jumped into LSUs ongoing fight with the SEC, filing a motion that seeks to knock out the conferences federal lawsuit against LSU officials. Murrill dismissed the SECs latest claims as a Hail Mary, a sign that the case, which began with allegations aimed at LSU football officials over recruiting ex-pro athletes, has now widened into a much messier battle for the university.
The expansion into mens basketball only adds to the pressure around Will Wades program, especially with the SEC now pressing beyond the original football-related dispute. Wade has already said he plans to follow conference rules that bar athletes who previously signed professional contracts from being rostered, but the conferences broader approach means LSU is now dealing with a legal fight that could reach deeper into how it handles basketball recruiting, too. LSUs Roster Picture Just Changed With One Big Eligibility Twist
LSUs roster picture got a lot clearer with a wave of eligibility updates that should help settle some of the uncertainty around the mens basketball rotation. Saliou Niang, Brice Dessert, Skyy Clark and Donovan Dent have all been ruled eligible to play, giving the Tigers a stronger sense of what their lineup and depth chart can look like as the season approaches. Niang brings the promise of an athletic upside that has already made him stand out as an NBA draft pick, while Dessert is expected to add help in the frontcourt.
Dent and Clark, who were teammates at UCLA, now look set to be part of LSUs backcourt mix, an encouraging development for a team trying to build continuity in the right places. Even so, not every update was as clean, and one players status came with a less positive note, leaving at least one part of the roster situation still unsettled. [Read more 🡒]
LSU Faces A Dangerous Road Test Auburn Is Built To Exploit
LSU heads into a tricky SEC road trip with Auburn coming off a moment that can change the mood around a program in a hurry. Both staffs have talked about the challenge of keeping their teams emotionally sharp after such big recent games, and that matters here because LSU has not been especially comfortable in recent league road games. On paper, the Tigers from Baton Rouge carry some advantages, with LSU ahead of Auburn in several offensive and defensive categories.
Auburn, though, has already shown what this kind of stage can do when the energy is right. The win over then-No. 1 Georgia gave the home side a fresh jolt and a reminder that momentum can tilt quickly in the SEC, especially when an opponent walks in with more pedigree but less margin for error. LSUs numbers suggest it should be better equipped for this matchup, but road games like this tend to come down to which team handles the emotional swing first. [Read more 🡒]
