The latest buzz around Easton Royal may have jumped the gun, but the Texas commitment is still intact for now.
Royal, the No. 1 high school football player in Louisiana out of Brother Martin High in New Orleans, was the subject of an erroneous report on Saturday claiming he had decommitted from Texas. That did not hold up. As of Monday morning, Royal remains committed to the Longhorns, according to 247sports.com and On3.com.
The 5-foot-11, 214-pound receiver has been committed to Texas since Nov. 29, 2025. Both major recruiting services have him slotted near the top of the national board: 247sports.com lists him as the No. 6 player in the country, the No. 1 wide receiver nationally and the No. 1 player in Louisiana, while On3.com has him at No. 6 overall, No. 1 at his position and No. 1 in the state.
Royal’s recruitment is still very much alive. He visited Texas over the weekend of June 19, after taking trips to LSU on May 28 and Florida on June 11.
Texas has plenty to sell. Under Steve Sarkisian, the Longhorns have won two conference championships in the last three seasons, going 12-2 and 8-1 in the Big 12 in 2023 with a College Football Playoff appearance, then 13-3 and 7-1 in the Southeastern Conference in 2024 with a semifinal finish in the CFP. Sarkisian’s class of 2027 is ranked No. 5 by 247sports.com and already includes 20 commitments, among them two wide receivers in addition to Royal.
As for where things stand beyond Texas, 247sports.com currently labels LSU and Florida as “warm” options for Royal, while Ohio State and Tennessee are listed as “cool.”
LSU coach Lane Kiffin’s class of 2027 is ranked 18th nationally by 247sports.com with 14 commitments. That group includes No. 46 wide receiver Ah’Mari Stevens of Chaminade-Madonna High in Hollywood, Florida, and No. 75 wide receiver Gary Burney Jr. of Parkway High in Bossier City.
