LSU Enters CFP Ranking Debate With Plenty On The Line

As LSU awaits its first College Football Playoff ranking, discrepancies between on-field results and advanced metrics leave room for speculation.

The first College Football Playoff rankings arrive Tuesday night, and LSU should be part of the conversation.

The Tigers’ spot is tough to pin down because the résumé cuts both ways. LSU doesn’t have a marquee win to hang its hat on, and the two best teams it has faced both handed it losses.

But the Tigers are still 6-2, they don’t have a bad loss on the ledger, and the advanced numbers are kind to them. Lane Kiffin and Co. are also sitting at No. 4 in the national championship betting odds, even if the committee won’t care about that at all.

What the selection group will care about is what happened on the field, and LSU has done a lot of its winning in convincing fashion. That makes the Tigers an interesting case as the first rankings of the 2026 cycle are unveiled.

My prediction is that LSU lands exactly where it sits in the AP Poll: No. 15.

That range feels right when you look at past teams with similar résumés. In the CFP era, 11 teams have entered the first rankings with a comparable profile to this LSU squad, including LSU itself in 2016.

That 2016 team checked in at No. 13 in the opening rankings. On the other end, 2025 Missouri had a similar résumé and came in at No. 22 last season.

A closer look at the most comparable teams shows how the committee has treated these kinds of résumés:

Team Record AP Committee

2016 LSU 5-2 15 13

2019 Notre Dame 6-2 15 15

2021 Ole Miss 6-2 15 16

2015 Michigan 6-2 16 17

2022 Penn State 6-2 16 15

2024 Clemson 6-2 19 23

2025 Missouri 6-2 19 22

That’s why LSU feels like a team that should settle somewhere in the middle of the range, probably not near the bottom. The Tigers have been dominant in stretches, and both losses came on the road against good teams. That should keep them from slipping too far.

So while the exact order is still unknown, LSU looks like a strong candidate to land in the No. 13-to-No. 22 window. My call: No. 15.

The first College Football Playoff rankings of 2026 will be released Tuesday, Nov. 3, with the show set for 6 p.m. CT on ESPN.

LSU Just Got A Stark Reminder About SEC Eligibility Rules

Missouri is dealing with an eligibility issue that doubles as a warning shot for the rest of the SEC. Guard CJ Gunn has been ruled ineligible by the conference after signing a professional contract and receiving payment to play in the Canadian Elite Basketball League, a move that runs afoul of the leagues rule on college basketball players who turn pro after enrolling.

Coach Dennis Gates confirmed the ruling and said there is no appeal, leaving Missouri without a path to get Gunn back on the floor through conference channels. The timing also shuts the door on the G League draft, a reminder that these eligibility questions can quickly spill beyond one roster and into a much wider set of consequences for teams trying to navigate the modern college game. LSU Fans Will Notice What Alabama Is Worried About In Death Valley

Keelon Russells development has become part of the conversation in Tuscaloosa at exactly the wrong time for Alabama, with a trip to Death Valley looming and Kalen DeBoer trying to keep his young quarterback on track. DeBoer has leaned into the idea that Russell has to keep learning from past experiences while staying composed once the game starts, a reminder that Alabama is still sorting through some of the same growing pains that tend to show up when the pressure rises.

For LSU fans, that is the kind of worry worth noting because it speaks to what Alabama thinks could swing a marquee SEC showdown. The Tigers get the Crimson Tide at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC, and the buildup already suggests the visitors know they will need steadiness from Russell if they want to handle the noise, the stage and the challenge that comes with playing in Baton Rouge. LSU Could Be Getting An Important Frontcourt Boost Sooner Than Expected

LSUs frontcourt could get a welcome boost sooner than expected, with Noa Morro now trending toward a return as early as next week. Kim Mulkey said the senior has been back on the floor in practice and taking part in pregame warm-ups, a notable step for a player who had surgery in early September to address a stress fracture.

Morro brings a veteran presence to the Tigers after a career that included professional experience in Spain and international play for Spanish national teams before arriving in Baton Rouge. For LSU, getting her back into the mix would add depth and experience inside at a time when every healthy body matters, and the next step will be seeing how quickly she can work back into game shape once she is cleared.
