Mason Braun seemed like a freshman finding his way in the early weeks of the season, but LSU saw the promise in his at-bats, rewarding him with the opening day start as the designated hitter. After slipping out of the rotation recently, Braun made a triumphant return on Saturday in a crucial game against Kentucky. His four RBIs, highlighted by a three-run homer, powered LSU to a commanding 7-0 victory, backed by a stellar 1-2 punch from pitchers William Schmidt and Zac Cowan.
LSU's offense was firing on all cylinders, a refreshing change in SEC play where they often struggled to complement their pitching. After a lackluster game one, the Tigers' bats came alive in game two, consistently making hard contact and maintaining pressure on Kentucky.
The Tigers scored early and often, with two runs in the second, three in the fourth, and two more in the sixth, creating the separation they needed. LSU's lineup delivered three doubles and drew nine walks, getting the leadoff man on base in five of the eight innings. Alongside Braun's heroics, Steven Milam added to the lead with a clutch two-RBI single down the first base line.
While the offense shone, Schmidt and Cowan were the backbone of LSU's shutout performance. It’s been a rare sight lately to see pitching, hitting, and defense all clicking, but that’s exactly what happened to even the series with the Wildcats.
Schmidt, going 5.1 innings, showcased his 2026 improvements by throwing strikes and mixing pitches effectively. He demonstrated poise under pressure, escaping a first-inning jam with a strikeout and navigating a third-inning threat by fanning Tyler Bell and inducing a popout. Despite allowing six hits and two walks, Schmidt leaned on his defense, which turned two double plays to keep Kentucky off the board.
Cowan was the epitome of efficiency in relief, inheriting two runners in scoring position in the sixth and striking out the next two batters on just six pitches. His 3.2 innings were a masterclass in control, retiring 10 of 12 batters and striking out seven. Cowan’s precision, landing 39 of 54 pitches for strikes, ensured Kentucky never mounted a serious threat.
This victory was pivotal for the Tigers, but the job isn’t finished. To capitalize on this momentum, LSU needs to close out the series on Sunday. With a full bullpen ready to go, the Tigers are poised to make a strong push for the series win.
