LSU-Auburn Just Got More Complicated At Linebacker

LSU and Auburn face defensive challenges as key linebackers Whit Weeks and Xaiver Atkins unexpectedly miss their upcoming clash.

LSU and Auburn are both headed into Saturday’s matchup without one of their top linebackers, leaving each defense with a noticeable hole in the middle.

For LSU, the absence comes from injury. Whit Weeks suffered a fractured right leg against Texas A&M, and while there is no return timetable, he is expected to sit out against Auburn. The Tigers have already dealt with a rough run of injuries this season, and Weeks is one of the biggest losses.

Auburn’s situation is different, but the result is the same: Xaiver Atkins will not be on the field. Atkins was suspended the week before Auburn played Georgia, missing that upset of the No. 1-ranked SEC matchup, and on Monday he was dismissed from the team, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported. Atkins addressed the move on X, saying that he has full respect for the program and plans to enter the transfer portal at the appropriate time.

Auburn head coach Alex Golesh did not reveal why Atkins was first suspended and then dismissed, saying the issues would be handled "in-house."

Atkins spent two seasons with Auburn after beginning his college career at LSU. Last season, he was a force for the orange and blue Tigers, finishing with nine sacks and 84 total tackles. Before the suspension, he was tracking toward another strong year with three sacks and 37 total tackles near the midpoint of the season.

The loss leaves Auburn thinner at linebacker, but LSU is dealing with the same problem on its own side. With Atkins and Weeks both expected to miss Saturday’s game, the position becomes a shaky spot for both defenses, and backup players will have to absorb a lot more responsibility.

There’s also a personal wrinkle to the absence. Atkins and Weeks were supposed to share the field again after building a relationship during their time together at LSU. In 2024, Atkins arrived in Baton Rouge as a freshman, and Weeks helped bring him along, often praising his athletic ability and the way he carried himself on defense.

What could have been a reunion in the middle of a high-profile SEC game will now be missing one of its key figures. Atkins’ dismissal strips Auburn of a major defensive piece and removes the chance for the former teammates to face each other in that setting.

LSU Heads To Auburn With Two More Starter Questions

LSUs injury picture got a little murkier coming out of the Mississippi State game, and now the Tigers are heading into Auburn with two more starter questions hanging over the week. Princewill Umanmielen and Jackson Harris both went down in the contest, and both figures are likely to land on the injury report as LSU starts sorting out who will be available for a road trip that already figures to test the depth chart.

Umanmielens issue is an upper body injury believed to be head-related, which could put him into concussion protocol, while Harris left with a foot injury and was seen in a boot afterward. Brian Kelly didnt offer any medical updates, though he did indicate Harris is expected to be fine, and LSU is prepared to lean on backups if either player cant go against Auburn. [Read more 🡒]

LSU Just Lost A Key Piece In Will Wades First Season

LSU has settled one eligibility fight before the season even tips, and the result leaves Will Wades first roster with a notable hole. Guard RJ Luis Jr. will not be cleared by the SEC to play for the Tigers after the league determined he violated conference rules tied to signing a professional contract, ending the programs battle over his status and shifting the focus to getting ready for the year ahead.

There is at least one brighter note in Baton Rouge, though, because forward Saliou Niang has been ruled eligible for the season. Niang was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers, but his decision to attend college came before recent NCAA rule changes, allowing LSU to keep him in the mix as it tries to move past the Luis situation and sort out its rotation. Will Wade Still Has One LSU Roster Question Fans Are Watching

Saliou Niang is finally cleared to suit up for LSU this season, giving Will Wade another piece to work with as the Tigers close in on opening night. The expectation is that Niang will get into the final exhibition game after missing the first two, a useful step for a team still trying to get its rotation sorted out.

Will Wade has stayed quiet on the eligibility situation involving other players, and that silence has kept one roster question hanging over the program as the preseason winds down. With legal matters still in play, LSUs final tune-up now carries a little extra weight as fans watch to see who else will be available when the games start counting. [Read more 🡒]
