Lane Kiffin’s move to LSU has already started to look like a winning bet, and the clearest evidence is showing up on the recruiting trail.
Kiffin addressed the decision during SEC Media Days and pointed directly to LSU’s offseason haul as part of the reason the switch made sense. In Baton Rouge, he has already put together a roster that mixes experienced veterans with the No. 1 recruiting class of 2026 and a heavy portal push.
That portal work has brought in some major names, including quarterback Sam Leavitt from ASU, offensive tackle Jordan Seaton from Colorado, safety Ty Benefield from Boise State, and wide receiver Eugene Wilson III from Florida, among others. Then came the wave of commits from the elite class of 2027, giving LSU another recruiting run that stands out not just in the program’s history, but in Kiffin’s own career.
“Somebody said it the other day... They were like he's been here six months and he's had more 5-star signees and commits than he did in the previous six years combined. That's kinda proof to me of the decision,” said Kiffin.
For Kiffin, the difference isn’t just about how hard he was recruiting before. It’s also about the power of LSU as the place making the pitch. He’s now selling a program with a deep talent base and a staff that includes former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron helping recruit defense.
There’s also the broader appeal of what LSU is building around its athletic department. The school recently extended its five-decade-long deal with Nike and became the first program to join Nike’s Blue Ribbon Elite program. On top of that, LSU now has 12 football players involved in NIL deals.
“No other school's above eight?....... We didn't say 12-11, we didn't say just SEC schools. That's a big reason why we're here,” said Kiffin.
The early returns have made one thing clear: LSU is giving Kiffin the kind of recruiting platform that can change the conversation fast.
“We're gonna make this thing different than anywhere else,” said Kiffin.
