Lane Kiffin’s first season at LSU already comes with a heavy load attached, and Jordan Rodgers isn’t easing that burden.
On ESPN’s "First Take," Rodgers made it clear he thinks the standard in Baton Rouge should be sky-high right away, arguing that Kiffin’s arrival comes with championship expectations from day one.
"Lane Kiffin has a lot to prove... they not only have to get to the College Football Playoff next year," Rodgers said. "Step one, they've got to get to a national championship because they have to be better than his team at Ole Miss was last year with less resources.

LSU’s decision to move on from Brian Kelly came after the Tigers decided being merely solid in the SEC wasn’t enough. Kelly had steadied the program after inheriting back-to-back .500-or-worse seasons, then put together a 10-4 debut, followed by a 10-3 year and a 9-4 season. But the Tigers still couldn’t make the leap into true College Football Playoff contention, and after a 5-3 start in 2025, LSU made the change.
That opened the door for Kiffin, who arrives in Baton Rouge after a six-year run at Ole Miss that changed the conversation around the Rebels. He went 55-19 there, posted double-digit wins in four of his last five seasons, and capped it with an 11-1 campaign in 2025 that sent Ole Miss to its first College Football Playoff.
Rodgers’ point is rooted in the idea that Kiffin has already shown what it takes to build a program, even if that climb wasn’t instant. Ole Miss didn’t become a playoff team overnight, and Kiffin spent six years getting the Rebels to that level. That’s part of why some would argue LSU should give him room to work.
Still, the expectations in Baton Rouge are different. LSU hired Kiffin because it believes the program has the resources and ceiling to chase championships now, not later. That means the Tigers should be in the playoff mix immediately, even if a national title in Year 1 may be asking a lot.
The real test will be whether LSU can balance urgency with patience. The standard is clear, but so is the reality of how long it can take to build a contender.
