Lane Kiffin didn’t hide his frustration Sunday when the subject turned to Kentucky’s overtime touchdown in Saturday night’s loss.
The LSU head coach said an official tried to explain why the play was allowed to continue after Kentucky appeared to be stopped short of the goal line before a late push sent the ball carrier into the end zone. The whistle never came for forward progress, and Kiffin said the line judge gave him a blunt reason.
"The line judge just said, 'Hey, in that situation, there's just too much at stake,'" Kiffin said. "He said he'd be killed if he would have blown the whistle for the play being stopped, even though it appeared to be stopped."
That explanation didn’t sit well with Kiffin. His complaint was simple: the moment shouldn’t matter when it comes to enforcing the rules.
"If you would have blown that whistle on first down, or if there were 10 minutes left in the game for forward progress being stopped ... don't not blow it because it's such a big play," Kiffin said.
"The rules are the rules. So if you see it that way, then see it that way. That's my complaint with it."
Kiffin also pointed to another late call that bothered him: a false start and a timeout that Kentucky was awarded during a two-point conversion attempt.
"Really big decision, really big call there," Kiffin said.
He said communication with the officiating crew was a problem throughout the game, though he closed by acknowledging the result with a shrug.
"But hey, it is what it is," Kiffin said.

LSU Now Faces A Bigger Fight For Louisianas Top 2027 Receiver
The race for Louisianas top 2027 receiver just got a lot more complicated. Easton Royal, the five-star standout from Brother Martin High in New Orleans and the nations No. 1 wideout in his class, has moved his commitment from Texas to Florida, reshaping a recruitment that already had plenty of attention from LSU and other major programs.
Royal had been committed to Texas since November 2023, but LSU has stayed involved, including a visit back in May 2023, and now the Tigers are staring at a tougher in-state battle after his recent trip to Florida. With coach Jon Sumralls staff making a strong push, LSU still has time to work, but the path to keeping one of Louisianas best prospects close to home just got steeper. [Read more 🡒]
LSUs Season Outlook Suddenly Hinges On One Unsettled Roster Issue
The early read on LSUs 2026-27 season is not a flattering one. The SEC preseason media poll has the Tigers pegged for 14th in the conference, and the preseason All-SEC teams came and went without an LSU player making the cut. That leaves a program trying to build momentum while also working through a roster that is still not fully settled.
LSU did beat McNeese State in an exhibition game, but the win came with only a limited number of players available. That is the larger issue hanging over the season outlook right now, because the Tigers are still waiting on multiple players to become eligible. Until that clears up, it is hard to know what LSUs actual ceiling looks like once the games start counting. [Read more 🡒]
LSU Suddenly Has A Big Mississippi State Question This Week
Mississippi States quarterback situation is suddenly one of the weeks most important storyline for LSU, with Kamario Taylor still working through a right-leg injury that has lingered since late September. Jeff Lebby has not offered a firm update on Taylors availability, and that uncertainty leaves the Tigers preparing for a matchup that could look very different depending on who is under center.
Billy Puckett and AJ Swann have both been mentioned as possible starters if Taylor cannot go, which adds another layer for LSU to monitor as the week unfolds. The next real checkpoint comes with Wednesdays injury report, when the picture should get clearer and the Tigers will know whether theyre getting the version of Mississippi State they expected or a backup-led offense with a different feel entirely.
