There’s a new era underway in Baton Rouge, and Lane Kiffin is making sure it starts with a bang.
Since taking over as LSU’s head coach, Kiffin has wasted no time putting his stamp on the program. He’s brought in a staggering 41 players from the NCAA Transfer Portal - the most he’s ever signed in a single offseason.
That’s not just a roster refresh; it’s a full-scale overhaul. And it’s exactly what you’d expect from someone who’s earned the nickname “The Portal King.”
But it’s not just the player personnel that’s changed. Kiffin has also cleaned house on the offensive side of the coaching staff, replacing every offensive assistant from Brian Kelly’s tenure.
There were shakeups on defense and special teams, too, along with multiple additions to the personnel department. It’s clear: Kiffin isn’t easing into this job - he’s attacking it head-on.
Still, even with all the new faces and fresh direction, Kiffin isn’t completely turning the page on LSU’s recent past. In fact, one of his latest hires shows he understands the value of continuity and culture.
Former LSU linebacker Greg Penn III is returning to the program - this time as a defensive analyst.
For those who’ve followed LSU closely over the last few seasons, Penn’s name should ring a bell. He was a steady presence in the Tigers’ defense from 2022 to 2024, starting for three straight years and racking up 264 career tackles. That includes 17.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and two interceptions - production that speaks to both his consistency and his playmaking ability.
But what really sets Penn apart is the jersey he wore in his final season: No. 18.
At LSU, that number isn’t just handed out. It’s reserved for a player who embodies leadership, toughness, and everything the program stands for.
Since 2004, the No. 18 jersey has become a symbol of character and commitment - often worn by players who’ve overcome adversity or emerged as locker room leaders. In 2024, that honor went to Penn, and he wore it with pride.
A Maryland native out of DeMatha Catholic, Penn originally signed with Ed Orgeron in 2021 and developed into a key piece of Brian Kelly’s defense. After going undrafted in 2025, he spent time as a free agent with the Minnesota Vikings last season.
Now, he’s back where it all started. And while he won’t be suiting up on Saturdays, his presence in the building will still matter - especially for a defense that’s looking to reestablish its identity under a new regime.
Penn’s return to LSU is more than just a feel-good story. It’s a smart move by Kiffin, who’s blending fresh energy with familiar faces. As the Tigers reload for 2026, having someone like Penn - who knows the program, understands the expectations, and has lived the culture - can be a valuable bridge between the past and the future.
Before leaving LSU, Penn shared a heartfelt message with fans:
“It’s been a privilege and honor to represent this program.
Tiger Nation, thank you for your endless support - you’ve made every moment unforgettable. I fell in love with the state of Louisiana because of you guys.”
Now, he’s back to help shape the next chapter. And with Kiffin building fast and bold, don’t be surprised if Penn’s behind-the-scenes impact proves just as important as any on-field addition.
