Gus Malzahn Lands New Role Shaping Playoff Picks

Gus Malzahn, a seasoned coach with rich experience, is set to bring fresh insights to the College Football Playoff selection committee in his upcoming term.

Gus Malzahn is set to bring his wealth of experience to the College Football Playoff (CFP) selection committee, beginning his three-year term in 2026. Joining him are Louisiana Athletic Director Bryan Maggard and former head coach Jeff Tedford, who led teams at Cal and Fresno State. These new members will step in for Chris Ault, Jeff Long, and David Sayler.

This marks a significant transition for the committee, which plays a crucial role in shaping the college football landscape. The CFP selection committee is tasked with determining the top 25 rankings and organizing the 12-team playoff at the season's end.

Comprising former coaches, players, journalists, and administrative officials, the committee ensures a broad and insightful perspective on the sport. To maintain this diversity of thought, members serve staggered three-year terms.

Malzahn’s appointment is a nod to his extensive 35-year career in football. As a former wide receiver for Arkansas and Henderson State in the 1980s, he transitioned into coaching, making impactful stops at Auburn, UCF, and Arkansas State.

His journey also included roles as an assistant coach at Arkansas, Tulsa, and Auburn before taking the helm at Auburn in 2013. Most recently, he wrapped up his coaching stint at Florida State before stepping into this new chapter.

As Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek continues his role as committee chair for a second consecutive season, the inclusion of Malzahn and his fellow appointees promises to bring fresh insights and seasoned expertise to the committee's deliberations.
