Garrett Nussmeier Gives LSU Fans Their First Real NFL Look

In a promising NFL preseason debut, Garrett Nussmeier, once an LSU standout, showcased his potential amidst challenges with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Former LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier got his first taste of NFL preseason action on Saturday, and the Kansas City Chiefs rookie handled it cleanly enough in a 20-12 loss.

Nussmeier finished 13 of 19 for 98 yards. He was sacked twice, but he avoided the back-breaking mistake: no touchdown passes, no turnovers. For a first preseason outing, that kind of steady line matters.

The former LSU starter arrived in the league as the No. 249 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft after being projected much higher. Instead of hearing his name called earlier, he slid all the way to the seventh round, a fall that cost him money but landed him in what looks like a stable spot with the Chiefs and their established offensive staff.

At LSU, Nussmeier spent five seasons in Baton Rouge and took over as QB1 in 2024. Over his college career, he piled up 7,699 passing yards and 52 touchdowns while completing 64% of his throws and tossing 24 interceptions.

His final year with the Tigers was uneven. A lingering injury slowed him for much of the season, and LSU’s year never really found its footing. Nussmeier made his final LSU start against Alabama in early November, with Michael Van Buren finishing the season at quarterback.

On the field Saturday, there were a couple of flashes that fit what made him such an interesting prospect in the first place. In one play, Nussmeier escaped the pocket to his right and fired an accurate throw on the move. In another, he rolled right again and hit a receiver in stride, giving the wideout enough room to get both feet down and secure the catch.

Jayden Daniels Is Suddenly Facing An LSU Fan Backlash

Jayden Daniels is back in the middle of an LSU conversation he probably would rather leave behind. The former Tigers star, now with the Washington Commanders, is in a dispute with LSU over the use of his name, image and likeness, and the issue has drawn extra attention because the school allowed another player to wear his former jersey number.

The reaction has not been quiet, either. ESPN commentator Paul Finebaum publicly criticized Daniels response and said the quarterback has lost support within LSU Nation, adding a sharper edge to what had already become a sensitive topic for fans who still view Daniels as one of the programs recent standard-bearers. For now, Daniels is preparing for his first NFL season opener with Washington against the Eagles on Sept. 13, even as the LSU chatter continues to linger. [Read more 🡒]

Ed Orgeron Is Already Raising The Standard At LSU Camp

Ed Orgerons return to LSU football has already added a familiar edge to fall camp, where the veteran coach is back in an assistant role working on defense and recruiting under Lane Kiffin. His presence has been felt quickly around the program, with players noticing the energy and authority he brings back to practice as the Tigers try to sharpen up before the season.

Orgeron has been spending time with a defensive line group that includes both transfers and freshmen, giving him a chance to set the tone with players who are still learning what it takes to perform at LSU. For a program that has long valued toughness and development in the trenches, his influence gives camp an unmistakable old-school weight while the bigger question is how far that standard can carry once the games begin.
