Florida is expected to add a familiar special teams hand to Jon Sumrall’s staff, with CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reporting Monday that the Gators are set to hire Greg McMahon as a special teams analyst.
McMahon most recently worked at Tulane, where he served as special teams coordinator in 2023 and 2024. He left the program saying he was headed into retirement, but now appears poised to return to the sideline in Gainesville.

The move would bring plenty of experience to Florida’s staff. McMahon spent 10 years in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints, including time as the team’s assistant special teams coach in 2006 and 2007 before serving as special teams coordinator from 2008 through 2016. He also won a Super Bowl with New Orleans in 2009.
His SEC background is just as notable. McMahon was a special teams consultant at LSU from 2018 to 2021 and was part of the Tigers’ national championship run in 2019.
At 66, McMahon’s résumé stretches across a long list of stops, including Eastern Illinois, Minnesota, North Alabama, Valdosta State, UNLV, Illinois, East Carolina and the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks.
If the hire is finalized, Gainesville will be McMahon’s first stop in Florida. The Gators open their season on September 5 against FAU.
