Ed Orgeron says the care he received at a Baton Rouge hospital quite literally kept him alive.
Speaking Thursday, the former LSU head coach said he was in rough shape before doctors stepped in and helped him through a serious health scare.
“I was about to die, and they saved my life,” Orgeron, 65, said. “First of all, I’m very happy to be here.
Dr. Katie’s here, Bud’s here, all the people that helped me live that night.
I was about to die, and they saved my life. And I’m very grateful for that.
Not only that night, but all through my recovery, these guys have been great. You know, we talk about family, one team, one heartbeat?
Our Lady of the Lake got the best family of doctors I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Orgeron said Dr. Katie and Dr.
Bud came to his house on a Saturday and Sunday. He also said Dr.
Conners opened the hospital on a Sunday so he could change his “wrap.”
“I mean, you guys are unbelievable,” Orgeron said. “They go far and beyond.
But you know what? I’m happy to be here.
I’m happy to represent the Tigers. I’m excited about our game on Saturday, 2:30 p.m.
Central Standard Time, the LSU fighting Tigers vs. the Alabama Crimson Tide.”
The specifics of Orgeron’s health issue still have not been made public as of Thursday afternoon. LSU head football coach Lane Kiffin said Orgeron had been away from the program because of serious health issues. Orgeron has since returned to the sideline for LSU’s wins against Auburn and Mississippi State.
“Coach O,” as he’s widely known, led LSU’s 2019 undefeated national championship team, the one built around Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson. LSU fired him in 2021 after the program’s results fell off.
Kiffin brought Orgeron back in a different role this past offseason, a move tied in part to their previous connection at USC and Kiffin’s belief that Orgeron can help recruit the state of Louisiana.

LSU Eyes Familiar Defensive Help Before Its Biggest Game Yet
With LSU preparing for its biggest game yet against Alabama, the Tigers are looking at a familiar face for some defensive help in Baton Rouge. Dave Aranda, who previously coordinated LSUs defense from 2016 to 2019 before taking over as Baylors head coach, is reportedly being pursued for an analyst-type role and is already in town, with interest on both sides.
Arandas return would add another layer of familiarity to a program that knows exactly what he brought the last time he was on campus. For LSU, the timing is notable: any extra defensive insight before Alabama comes into focus would be welcome, and the possibility of reuniting with one of the architects of its recent success is the kind of development worth watching closely. LSU Eyes Familiar Coaching Addition With Alabama Stakes Rising
A familiar face is back in Baton Rouge, with LSU reportedly moving to bring former Baylor head coach Dave Aranda aboard as an analyst on Lane Kiffins staff. Aranda is no stranger to the Tigers, having served as LSUs defensive coordinator from 2016 to 2019, and his return would add an experienced defensive mind to a staff that is still taking shape.
Aranda was fired by Baylor earlier this season, and he is already in Baton Rouge as LSU works to finalize the hire. For a program that knows exactly what he can bring, the move carries obvious intrigue, especially with the stakes continuing to rise around the Tigers next steps on the coaching side. [Read more 🡒]
LSU Heads Into Alabama Showdown With One Big Availability Concern
LSU heads into Saturdays showdown with Alabama carrying more than the usual SEC-week pressure, and the injury report only adds to the tension. The Tigers will host the Crimson Tide in Baton Rouge at 2:30 p.m. CT in a game with College Football Playoff implications, and LSU has several players listed as out, doubtful or questionable as the week winds down.
The biggest concern is linebacker Whit Weeks, who is now doubtful after missing multiple games. Alabama has injury questions of its own, but LSUs availability picture is the one to watch as kickoff approaches, especially with so much at stake in a rivalry game that could shape the postseason race.
