The former Cardinals quarterback, drafted No. 40 overall by the Saints, has wasted no time becoming one of the NFL’s most talked-about young passers. His season line now sits at 3,046 passing yards with a 67.9 percent completion rate. Over the first two weeks of the season, he’s thrown for 662 yards, four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown while completing 68.9 percent of his throws. He currently leads all NFL quarterbacks in passing yards through two weeks, and his strong start has pushed him into the MVP conversation.
That’s not just a hot streak, either. Shough’s name is already showing up ahead of quarterbacks like Drake Maye, Jalen Hurts, Matthew Stafford and Trevor Lawrence in MVP odds.
Louisville saw a preview of this in 2024, when Shough spent one season with the Cardinals and became just the 13th player in program history to reach 3,000 passing yards. That year, he threw for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns and one rushing score, while completing 62.7 percent of his passes and tossing six interceptions.
At the NFL level, he’s already making that Louisville season look like the start of something bigger. Shough helped lead the Saints to a 5-4 record in their final nine games, and New Orleans is buzzing early after its win over Lamar Jackson and Baltimore last week.
