Louisville’s Tre Richardson picked up national recognition for a big Week 1 showing, landing on the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll after helping spark the Cardinals in their opener against Ole Miss.
Richardson, a transfer from Vanderbilt, scored two touchdowns in Louisville’s last-second 41-38 loss to No. 9-ranked Ole Miss in Nashville last Sunday. He was one of five players named to the honor roll for the week.
The National College Football Awards Association will name UCLA senior running back / return specialist Wayne Knight as the Paul Hornung Award Player-of-the-Week for his performance in the Bruins’ road win at Cal.
Knight led the group with a three-touchdown outing in Berkeley, touching the ball three different ways for 157 all-purpose yards in UCLA’s 45-24 win. He ran eight times for 71 yards and scored on runs of eight, 31 and four yards, with the 31-yard burst in the middle of the fourth quarter standing up as the game-winner. Knight also caught two passes for 30 yards, returned two kickoffs for 56 yards and produced six first downs from scrimmage.
Richardson’s day for Louisville was every bit as versatile. He touched the ball six times in three different ways and found the end zone twice.
His 31-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter gave Louisville a 13-10 lead, and later in the quarter he hauled in a 62-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 24. He finished with two first downs from scrimmage and one fair catch on a punt.
Indiana junior running back / return specialist Turbo Richard also earned a spot on the list after a productive afternoon in the Hoosiers’ 52-16 win over North Texas. Richard touched the ball 18 times three different ways for 145 all-purpose yards and two scores.
He rushed 15 times for 58 yards and scored on runs of two and one yards, added one catch for 38 yards and returned two kickoffs for 59 yards. His 41-yard kickoff return to midfield helped set up an IU touchdown drive, and he accounted for three first downs from scrimmage.
Oklahoma’s Isaiah Sategna III made the honor roll after a huge all-purpose performance in the Sooners’ 51-0 rout of UTEP. He touched the ball seven times three different ways for 215 all-purpose yards and scored twice.
Sategna piled up 115 punt return yards, including an 88-yard touchdown in the first quarter, then added four catches for 76 yards and a 34-yard touchdown in the third quarter. He also returned one kickoff for 24 yards and accounted for four first downs from scrimmage, all on scoring drives.
Notre Dame junior running back / return specialist Aneyas Williams rounded out the group after a strong showing in the Fighting Irish’s 41-13 win over Wisconsin at Lambeau Field. Williams touched the ball 23 times three different ways for 143 all-purpose yards and scored twice.
He ran 20 times for 90 yards, including three- and five-yard scoring runs in the second half as Notre Dame pulled away. Williams also caught one pass for 13 yards, returned two kickoffs for 42 yards and accounted for four rushing first downs and one receiving first down, all on scoring drives.
