The Ville’s first run through The Basketball Tournament didn’t get off to the start it wanted.
La Familia, the UK alumni team, held off The Ville, the Louisville alumni squad, 72-68 on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington to open the best-of-three series. Game two is set for Monday in Louisville at Freedom Hall, with tip scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Ville actually came out sharp enough early, knocking down 7 of 12 shots in the opening quarter and taking a 21-17 lead after one. But the offense cooled in a hurry. By the time the team had doubled its made field goals, there were only 16 seconds left in the third quarter.
That cold stretch gave La Familia room to take control. The UK group outscored The Ville by 12 in the second quarter and went into halftime up 41-33. The margin reached 10 by the end of the third.
Even then, The Ville made things interesting in the fourth. Russ Smith buried a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 10 as the period opened, and Montrezl Harrell followed with seven straight points, including a powerful dunk that brought Louisville within five. Then David Johnson forced a steal, found Carson Williams for a dunk, and suddenly it was 63-59 as the Elam Ending was set at 71 points.
From there, The Ville kept pushing. Johnson’s dunk stretched Louisville’s run to 14-0 as the Elam Ending began.
Harrell then tied it at 63-63 with another dunk. La Familia answered with a 7-2 burst, and Trey Lewis hit a 3 to pull The Ville back within one score before La Familia finished it off with a dunk.
Chris Jones led The Ville with 16 points. Johnson and Harrell each added 12.
As a team, The Ville shot 42.3% from the field and made just 6 of 28 attempts from 3-point range.
