Paul Petrino is making a familiar return to the University of Louisville, stepping into the role of Senior Offensive Assistant and tight ends coach under Jeff Brohm. With a history deeply intertwined with the Cardinals, Petrino brings a wealth of experience and a personal connection to the program.
Reflecting on his previous stints at Louisville, Petrino noted, "It's been a few years," acknowledging the nearly two-decade gap since his last tenure. His past roles included serving as the wide receiver coach and later as the offensive coordinator during his brother Bobby Petrino's first head coaching stint.
Returning to Louisville feels like a homecoming for Petrino, who expressed excitement about rejoining the Cardinals. "It's awesome," he shared.
"Being back with Coach Brohm and around family is a great opportunity. We've had success here before, and I'm eager to contribute to the program's success again."
The decision to return was an easy one for Petrino, largely influenced by family ties. His son, Mason, is a quality control coach with the Cardinals, and his daughter, Ava, is attending college nearby.
"With two of my three kids here, it was a no-brainer," Petrino explained. "I was just waiting for the opportunity."
Mason, now in his third season with Louisville, works with the wide receivers, and Paul sees working alongside him as a significant perk. "It's awesome to see Mason growing under Jeff's guidance," Paul said proudly. "He's improving every day."
With over 30 years of coaching experience, Petrino's journey began in the early 1990s at Idaho. His career path has seen him take on various roles, including a stint with the Atlanta Falcons and multiple positions at Arkansas and Illinois. His most notable achievement as a head coach came in 2016 at Idaho, where he earned Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year honors after leading the Vandals to a 9-4 season.
Petrino's coaching prowess was further demonstrated during his time at Central Michigan and South Alabama, where he significantly impacted the offensive units. At South Alabama, his receivers posted impressive numbers, contributing to one of the best statistical seasons in the program's history.
Now back at Louisville, Petrino's extensive experience and personal connections are set to be invaluable assets as he aims to elevate the Cardinals' performance. His return marks not just a continuation of a storied career but a new chapter in a place he holds dear.
