Pat Kelseys Push For Elite Guard Could Change Louisvilles Odds

Pat Kelsey's strategic efforts may just position Louisville as a frontrunner in the race to land elite recruit Cayden Daughtry.

Pat Kelsey is making a clear push to keep Louisville in the mix for one of the country’s elite guards, and Cayden Daughtry is now firmly on the Cardinals’ radar.

Daughtry, the No. 3 recruit in the nation and one of the top point guards in the 2027 class, had already trimmed his list to 14 schools earlier this year, with Louisville included. That alone was a step forward. Now the Cardinals appear to have gained real momentum after Kelsey delivered a direct message during a visit to South Florida.

“I wasn’t planning on taking a visit there, but Pat Kelsey really just came down to South Florida when I was at one of my practices and put it straightforward: “We need you. We want you.” stated Daughtry, according to Tipton.

“After reconsidering and seeing the energy he had, how Coach Jermaine and everybody came down to practice, and how they were, I couldn’t leave them out. So I decided to take a visit there, and I want to see what’s up.

I want to see it firsthand.”

That kind of approach has clearly left an impression. Louisville is now set to receive an official visit from the five-star guard, giving Kelsey a chance to keep building on the pitch.

Daughtry’s production this offseason at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam backed up the hype. He averaged 32.3 points per game while shooting 56.3 percent from the field, 38.2 percent from 3-point range, and 90.4 percent at the free-throw line. He also posted 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.9 steals per game.

He has already taken official visits to Florida State, Iowa, Tennessee, and Florida, and Tipton reports that Louisville, Arkansas, and Miami will also host him officially this fall.

Louisville has been active with another major guard target as well. Kelsey has made multiple trips to see 5-star point guard Reese Alston, who has already taken an official visit to the Cardinals. But the pursuit of Daughtry adds another layer to what Louisville is trying to build in the backcourt.

For Cardinals fans, Daughtry is the name to watch. He’s rated as high as No. 3 overall and No. 2 among point guards, and the profile matches the kind of talent that can shape a program fast.

Louisville Defense Faces A Real Test Against NC States Offense

NC State heads into its meeting with Louisville sitting at 2-2, but the record only tells part of the story for an offense that has shown it can stress a defense in different ways. Quarterback CJ Bailey has given the Wolfpack a steady presence, while the scheme also leans on the run game and a receiver group that can create problems after the catch. The offensive line has had its share of challenges in recent games, which makes the way NC State handles protection and run blocking a key part of this matchup.

From Louisvilles side, the challenge is less about one spotlight player than about matching up with an offense that can attack from multiple angles. Duke Scott has been a steady part of that ground game, and Keenan Jackson adds another layer as a target Louisville has to account for on every snap. If the Cardinals can disrupt the Wolfpack up front and make Bailey play from behind the chains, they can shape the game to their advantage, but NC State has enough pieces to make this a real test. Louisville Just Made This 5-Star Recruitment A Real Battle

King Gibsons recruitment is starting to look like the kind of high-level battle that can shape a class, and Louisville has put itself firmly in the mix. The five-star guard in the 2027 class has been on the road with official visits, and the Cardinals have emerged as one of the schools drawing real momentum as his process moves deeper into the fall.

Gibson has not made a commitment yet, but the picture is getting tighter and more competitive. Louisville is contending with Arkansas, Providence and LSU, and the recent wave of visits has only added to the intrigue around where he might land next. For the Cardinals, the encouraging sign is that they are still very much in the conversation as the race begins to narrow. [Read more 🡒]

Louisville Faces A Bigger Problem Than Just Bouncing Back At NC State

Louisville heads to North Carolina State for an ACC matchup with more than just last weeks loss hanging over it. Jeff Brohm spent part of the buildup sorting through injury concerns and defensive questions, while Dave Doeren pointed to Louisvilles turnover margin and the strength of its defense as reasons this one has plenty of urgency on both sides.

The bigger issue for the Cardinals is that key pieces may not be ready when kickoff comes around. Lincoln Kienholz is still being monitored after getting hurt late against Wake Forest, and Koen Entringer missed last week as a late scratch, leaving Louisville to adjust on the fly in a game where depth and stability could matter as much as any rebound effort.
