Louisville basketball’s interest in Seth Trimble was never a mystery. Pat Kelsey laid it out plainly, and his words make it obvious why the Cardinals pushed so hard to add the former North Carolina guard.
Trimble’s status is now up in the air after being ruled ineligible and needing to file his own lawsuit or injunction to try to regain eligibility under the “five-for-five” rule. Louisville’s roster plans have taken a hit because of that, but the appeal of Trimble is still easy to see if he ultimately gets on the floor.
Kelsey had already shown his enthusiasm for the move before the ineligibility news surfaced. In a podcast interview with CBS Sports and Gary Parrish, Parrish asked about the late-offseason addition, and Kelsey didn’t hesitate to explain what stood out about Trimble.
“That is a no-brainer, because he has it," stated Kelsey on Trimble." He has a twinkle in his eye.
He has a bounce in his step. He’s got a special aura about him, special heart, special spirit."
That kind of praise fits what Trimble just showed at North Carolina. He is coming off his best season, one that included the viral game-winner against Duke and a career-high 14 points per game.
If he’s cleared to play, Trimble projects as a starter and gives Louisville a physical guard who can take on the opponent’s best perimeter threat while still providing dependable offense. His arrival also helped the Cardinals’ National Title odds move from +2500 to +2200.
There was risk in pursuing him because of the “five-for-five” rule, but Kelsey’s comments make the fit crystal clear. Trimble brings the kind of intensity and energy Louisville wants. Now the Cardinals are just waiting to see whether he’ll be eligible to give them all of it.
