Louisville is facing the ACC Tournament without one of their standout players. Freshman guard Mikel Brown will be sidelined due to a persistent back issue, as announced by the team on Tuesday. The hope is that this extra downtime will have him back to full strength in time for the NCAA Tournament next week.
The Cardinals are set to kick off their ACC Tournament journey against SMU on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. ET, with the game broadcast on ESPN. A win here would propel them into a second-round clash with Miami.
Head coach Pat Kelsey emphasized the strategic decision to rest Brown, aiming for his complete recovery for the upcoming March Madness.
“Mikel is eager to hit the court for the ACC Tournament, but our priority is his health and having him at 100% for the NCAA Tournament,” Kelsey stated. “He’s close and really wants to join his teammates.”
Brown’s season has been marred by this injury, which first sidelined him for eight games starting mid-December. He then re-aggravated it in late February, causing him to miss Louisville’s last two regular-season games.
Despite these setbacks, Brown has been a pivotal figure for the Cardinals, posting averages of 18.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 4.7 assists over 21 games. His performance has already caught the eyes of NBA scouts, projecting him as a 2026 draft prospect.
Louisville wrapped up the regular season with a 22-9 overall record and an 11-7 mark in ACC play. They’re currently pegged as a No. 6 seed for the NCAA Tournament, according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.
