Louisville’s cornerback room has already given Steve Ellis plenty to like through the first week of fall camp.
After the Cardinals finished their fifth day of work on Thursday morning, Ellis - the team’s co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach - met with reporters and pointed first to the value of returning corner Tayon Holloway. Holloway logged more than 100 snaps for Louisville last season, and Ellis said that experience is paying off as the position group gets rebuilt around him.
"He's a guy that's selfless," Ellis said. "He does a good job of leading those guys on the field and off the field.
The good thing about Tayon, they get a chance to watch him work. Now he don't say a lot.
He's not a big talker, but he put his work in."
Ellis also praised the way the newer faces in the room have handled the transition. He said the group has embraced coaching, shown the right attitude, and kept improving from spring to summer to fall camp.
"It's been really good," Ellis said. "Anytime you got a chance to have a willing group, it's willing to learn.
All those guys that we have brought in, they came in with a great attitude. I mean, it's just been unbelievable to have those guys meeting this spring, then actually have them again in the summer, then having this fall camp.
Those guys are doing well. They're excited about each other.
The good thing about that, this is a brotherhood. That's what I like about those guys."
Louisville’s cornerback depth is noticeably deeper than it was a year ago. Along with Holloway, the Cardinals also bring back Antonio Harris and have added transfer Myles Norwood, Brycen Scott, DJ Waller Jr. and Santana Wilson, plus true freshmen Jaydin Broadnax and Kris Bruson.
